116 MATERIALISTIC MATTERS S amuel Amoia has an eye for unconventional beauty and finds it in unexpected and sometimes irreverent materials. The New York interior designer is known for his collaborations with interior designer Stephen Sills and hotel heavyweights Ian Schrager and André Balazs. Amoia also makes furniture for his own spaces, sometimes incorporating amusing materials like sprinkles, gumballs, and marbles. He even made a coffee table out of ground coffee. At Amoia Studio, which he co-founded in 2015 with his sculptor brother Dominic Amoia, Samuel upped the ante. Minimalist and geometric tables are laden in crushed malachite, red jasper, lapis lazuli, pyrite, and black tourmaline. Consoles are clad in textural shaved brass and aluminum scrap shavings, and topped in elegant honed Italian onyx. One remarkable console has a naturalistic slab base formed from rock salt and a blue-concrete top, while drum tables are rendered in plaster and crushed gemstones, or exquisitely sculpted by hand in bronze. Amoia Studio's fresh perspective appeals to a forward-thinking bunch, including clients such as Dior, Peter Marino, Moda Operandi, Stella McCartney, and Calvin Klein. Brian Erden's Edition One collection for his rug company, Erden, is made from beautiful, exotic materials woven together in technically sophisticated ways. He's even patented a technique for embedding hand-scraped bronze and brass pieces in grid patterns into the rugs. Carpets and rugs are hand-spun and woven in Nepal and Peru from alpaca, mohair, wool, and other exotic fibers, and throws are hand-woven in the Himalayas in mohair, superfine alpaca, merino wool, and nettle.
