R ed & White Gallery i n F a y e t t e v i l l e ' s historic square unfurls a fall season that tilts towards functional art and greater purpose, with a nod to the red-hot American craft movement. The action begins this month with "Maya Women's Rugs: Art & Innovation," organized by textile master, teacher, and curator Mary Anne Wise, in from Wisconsin. These vibrant, intricate rugs are hand-hooked by young women in Guatemala, whose rug-making income has transformed the lives and futures of their families. Wise is the founder of Multicolores, a nonprofit co-op that financially empowers these millennial women, all descendants of the Maya. Acquire a rug (from $3,600 for a 48-by-68 creation) and Wise's book that documents the journey, Rug Money: How a Group of Maya Women Changed Their Lives through Art and Innovation ($29.95). Opening night on Saturday, September 15, starts with a 4 pm book signing, followed by a reception until 7:30 pm (exhibition through October 6).
