As The Menil Collection commemorated its 30th anniversary last year, it was time for a refresh and redux of its Renzo Piano-designed building, which has been hailed as one of the most transformative in the world. Shuttered since late February for preservation of its ebonized loblolly pine floors, lighting enhancements, and other facility updates, the closure also gave opportunity for a reinstallation of the Menil's permanent collection. The occasion resulted in the first rethinking of the collection since Dominique de Menil personally curated the rooms and display cases more than 30 years ago; it gives a chance for new works, including recent acquisitions and promised gifts, to be seen. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill is the architecture firm for the near-six-acre project on the corner of Post Oak Boulevard and Richmond. "This is a defining development," says CEO Cary McNair.
