THE SYMPHONY BALL'S NOD TO THE GLITTERING HEYDAY WHEN GAMBLING RULED I n a nod to the island city's halcyon days, the Houston Symphony rollicked in a 1940s mood at its annual ball, which marked the debut of newly anointed symphony executive director and CEO John Mangum. The Post Oak Hotel ballroom was transformed into a palm-shrouded facsimile of Galveston's notorious Balinese Room for the occasion, with a Rat Pack tribute duo of "Sammy Davis Jr." and "Deano" setting the musical tone. Overseeing the flashback were chairs Robin Angly and Robin Smith and co-chairs Darrin Davis and Mario Gudmundsson. Balinese Room tradition continued after dinner with casino games and velvet hammers, the defunct nightclub's signature drink. While the dice rolled, New York DJ Kalkutta pumped the beats.
