When St. Roch Market opened in New Orleans in 2014, it helped usher in a new way of dining. Now its creators are opening a new food hall in Rice Village. It won't be Houston's fi rst food hall, but this St. Roch offspring may prove to be the most infl uential: It's part of the transformation that's seen high-profi le restaurants move into Rice Village, including gourmet sandwich haven Mendocino Farms and wine bar Sixty Vines. The Bayou City is suddenly travel hot, appearing on list after list of the best places to visit in 2019. While Houston doesn't have the Falkland Island's penguins, its long-rec- ognized restaurant scene is now comple- mented by showcase hotels such as The Post Oak. The New York Times is most wowed by the new Menil Drawing Center, while Bloomberg touts the $450 million expansion of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Food and art city? Now this spot is being transformed into an independent boutique hotel dubbed the C. Baldwin. The hotel is named for Charlotte Baldwin, wife of Houston co-founder Augustus Chapman Allen. With Houston's Lauren Rottet and Philadelphia-based interior de- signer Kate Rohrer leading this multi-mil- lion-dollar reimagining, the unremarkable should become special. But the more modest $60 million Fertitta Center at the University of Houston might give him the most pleasure. This is the new home of UH basketball — and it's the rare Fertitta project not designed to make money. "My dad loves UH," Michael Fertitta, Tilman's oldest son, tells PaperCity.
