54 ART + DECORATION B auhaus-trained artist Josef Albers was one of the 20th century's most influential painters, teachers, and color theorists. To coincide with the Bauhaus' 100th anniversary, London rug and fabric designer Christopher Farr has released two new rugs based on Albers' series, "Homage to the Square," a collaboration with the Josef & Anni Albers Foundation. The Homage paintings, made between 1950 and 1976, are among Albers' most famous works. He produced hundreds of variations — the composition consisting of three to four squares set inside each other, with the squares slightly gravitating towards the bottom edge. The deceptively simple works are hailed for their extraordinary perceptual complexity. Homage to the Square rug, 5'9" X 5'9," $1,150, limited edition of 150, through Artware, artwareeditions.com.
