DIVE INTO OUR DIGITAL WORLD PAPERCITYMAG.COM BEAN BONANZA D allas' love for coffee shops is hitting overdrive with the addition of two new caffeine havens. La La Land Kind Cafe and its 23-year-old owner, Francois Reihani, are creating plenty of buzz, not only because of its look, but also due to its mission. La La Land employs kids who have aged out of the foster- care system. Dallas' Deep Ellum neighborhood fi nally landed its fi rst coffee shop. Merit Coffee is all about roasting its own beans — and shows serious reverence for Pop-Tarts. Go ahead and skip Starbucks. Read more at papercitymag.com/dallas-coffee-shops. WHAT ABOUT BOB? J.LO'S CHALLENGE When a founder sells off his restaurant, there are usually no second chances. But Bob Sambol is getting one: He bought back the original Bob's Steak & Chop House on Lemmon Avenue that became a Dallas institution. Sambol even left his job as president of the Trinity Groves restaurant group to do so. "I missed being at one restaurant," Sambol tells PaperCity. Now he's conjuring up the magic — and the personal touch — of a restaurant that's been open for 25 years. Can an icon compete with the city's fl ashy new hot spots? Read more at papercitymag.com/ bobs-steakhouse. A real-life Candy Land has popped up in Dallas, taking over a space in The Hill shopping center. This larger-than-life interactive art installation has visitors roaming through 12 rooms of candy- themed creations. The marshmallowy min i theme park, dubbed Candytopia, opened in Santa Monica last year before hitting San Francisco, New York, and Atlanta. Celebs Drew Barrymore, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Biel, and Bruce Willis have already fallen under its spell. But artist/creator Jackie Sorkin insists this is not just another Instagram-geared playground. Read more at papercitymag.com/candytopia. Jennifer Lopez's 10-day diet challenge is all the rage. But what happens when a society scribe attempts to cut all sugar and carbs from her own diet? PaperCity's Shelby Hodge took the challenge that has JLo and her beau, Alex Rodriguez — who hardly need a weight loss regimen — crowing. "I was as religious as a nun the fi rst fi ve days… By day six, I was slipping like a sinner on a fast boat to hell," Shelby notes. Get all the details — what worked and what didn't (so many eggs) — in this report from the party front lines. Read more at papercitymag.com/jlo-diet.
