SIMON GENTRY L I n honor of all the art popping up around us, Ive hung my Hunt Slonem portrait to use as this months moniker. The big blockbuster news is the second annual Houston Fine Art Fair, attracting 10,000 art fans. Opening night Thursday, September 13, is terribly chic with perhaps 2,000 people equally divided between those seriously considering the art and others seriously catching up with what everyone did over the summer. I love both. Seriously. This year, the blue-chip Fair moves to Reliant Stadium, where 70+ galleries will set up exquisite tableaux. The gallery owners are there, many artists are milling, the bar is always open, and a cafe sets up shop. PaperCitys Curate bookshop will be there with the newest books covering design, fashion, gardening, pop culture and, of course, art. A VIP Pass for $125 covers opening night, all Fair days, access to the VIP Lounge (architect Lauren Rottet is designing the lounge) and more. General tickets start at $25. See Catherine D. Anspons overview on page eight, and our four-page Special Section in this issue your GPS for all things HFAF. See you there. Kate Stukenberg years of training in tae kwon do must have instilled some innate sense of condence in me, and I gave chase. The idiot slowed down to turn a corner, and I cut him off body-slamming him over a three-foot concrete wall. He landed upside down and in pain. He came up stumbling, and a lifeguard who happened to witness this came to my aid, and we both apprehended him until the police arrived. Back in Texas, the DA on the case called and told me that I may have to come out for the trial courtesy of the State of California. Seems the tattoed-from-head-to-toe-skinhead was a monster who had just gotten out of an 18-year jail sentence for aggravated assault. I chuckled and said that this was all over a cheap, rusted bike. She didnt chuckle but said, Mr. Kastleman, you have done the community a service, and I will see that he doesnt get out for a long time. I hope your summer was not that exciting. Let the fall season begin were ready and Ive got your back! Jim Kastleman, publisher and crime-ghter jim@papercitymag.com The Countdown: Year 3 Fashion Houston Zac Posen H Party: Houston Symphony Gala: Rock Me, Amadeus! 22 38 ast month, I wrote about some high-tech magic that digital marketers conjure to seek customers on the Web. When national print (ad) buyers make their decisions about what publication to buy, they often acquire data from syndicated sources that informs the buyer as to which publication is best for certain categories of brands. Additionally, we know one of the rst things they do is call local store managers and even friends, and ask which is the most relevant publication in the market. This year, and especially this fall, PaperCity has a ood of new national advertisers, including Michael Kors, Bottega Veneta, Kate Spade, Lagos, Omega and Montblanc. Some of these ran with us years ago and sat out during the recession, and some run with us exclusively. Its an honor to be ratied by such brands as the top luxury publication in town. Aside from being a publisher, apparently I can now add crime-ghter to my rsum. During my nal trip to California this summer to a rented house in Pacic Beach some neighbors informed me they thought they saw someone steal a bike from the garage. My 14-year-old son and I went on the hunt. The drug-induced thief must have lost his bearings, because ve minutes later we spotted him in the alley behind the house. Generally Im a pacist, but my ope youre speed-tapping to the Fashion Houston presented by Audi ticket Designer Monique site as fast as those little Lhuillier ngers can peck. The VIP tickets are on sale now, and if the last two years are any indication, the VIPs go rpido. Come Zac November 12 through 15, Posen youll want to be perched in a premier row to see the drama and the fanfare of fashion star Zac Posen, Gemma Khang in his rst foray to Fashion Houston. Also new this year, Gemma Khang, Georges Chakra, BCBG Max Azria and Herve Leger, Monique Lhuillier and more. Yes, the Spring 2013 fabulous frocks will be there, but so will the name on the label, as each show is also a personal appearance by the designer. Closing Fashion Houston Thursday, November 15, is the tribute to our philanthropic darling, Fashion Icon Fashion Icon Diane Diane Lokey Farb Lokey Farb.
