40 © MARK SHAW/MPTV IMAGES A s fashion magazines are concerned, there's a golden trifecta of editors never to be matched in their impact on the creative realm of fashion. The trio is comprised of France's Carine Roitfeld, the former editor in chief of Vogue Paris, who now oversees her own independent publication, CR Fashion Book; Anna Wintour, the longtime editor of Vogue and the artistic director of Conde Nast; and the late Franca Sozzani, the dynamite editor who oversaw Vogue Italia for 28 years. Sozzani is most regarded for her spark of rebellion, featuring fashion editorials in Vogue Italia that touched on topics so controversial that the features alone often made hard- news headlines — stirring outrage, inspiration, and heated debate. In 2014, she caused controversy for a portfolio of fashion editorial images by Steven Meisel, depicting models as the victims of violent attacks by men. THE BRILLIANCE OF DISRUPTION A NEW BOOK ABOUT THE LATE VOGUE ITALIA EDITOR FRANCA SOZZANI PAINTS A GLORIOUS PORTRAIT OF THE WORLD'S MOST FEARLESS FASHION EDITOR. BY CHRISTINA GEYER Franca Sozzani in her Piazza Castello office In 2005, Linda Evangelista took the cover in bandages, escorted by a nurse through the hallway of a posh apartment building. The Makeover Madness editorial, another shot by Meisel, was a direct response to the increase in plastic surgery and its normalization in society. Sozzani's Black Issue in 2008, which she dedicated entirely to women of color, only featured black women in the issue's pages. This was a loud cry by Sozzani against the lack of diversity in the fashion industry. In September 2016, just three months before Sozzani's death, the editor's son, Francesco Carrozzini, released a documentary chronicling the impact of his mother's work and vision, "Franca: Chaos and Creation." Assouline has released a book on Sozzani by the same name. The career of the courageous Sozzani comes to life in more than 400 pages, by way of the images she helped to mastermind and notes written by her fashion industry friends that speak to her personal and global legacy.
