COLORADO | $2,395,000 OBSESSIONS. DECORATION. SALIENT FACTS. 22 A ctivists Arise: Newly anointed Artadia Houston Award winner A d r i a n a C o r r a l h a s a big year coming up: She's making her Houston debut at Moody Gallery, then heading to New Orleans for Prospect Five, where's she's one of the headliners, after wrapping up a group show at MASS MoCA. The title of her solo at Moody, "Line as human / La línea como concepto humano," references a text by Latin American great Gego (through February 15). Expect nuanced, intimate works based on Corral's meticulous research — a sensibility that has earned her attendance at a U.N. session in Geneva addressing human rights. It's a Good Time to Be a Houston Artist: Vincent Valdez, Corral's partner and occasional collaborator, also received a $10,000 Artadia Award; the artists were selected by Menil curator Irene Mei Zi Shum and Blaffer curatorial fellow Tyler Blackwell … One of the most monumental prizes in recent memory, the Creative Capital Awards, confers a hefty $100,000 per recipient (divided evenly into cash funding and career services). Among the 41 Creative Capital honorees for 2020 is Houston-based musician and conceptual artist Jawwaad Taylor, whose award is for a visionary project exploring sound frequencies as healing for sickle-cell anemia patients … We're also tracking an exciting initiative as Art League Houston partners with the Mayor's "S lip inside the eye o f y o u r m i n d … D o n 't y o u know you might find … A better place to play," croons English singer/songwriter Noel Gallagher. Such is the reverie spun by the latest addition to Tom Ford's men's fragrance collection, Beau de Jour. It's a trip back in time — nostalgic, with the retro feel of vintage barbershops. At its heart, we find a fougère with a deeply herbal lavender quality, balanced by notes of African rosemary, basil, geranium, oakmoss, patchouli, and amber. Fresh and old-fashioned, earthy and polished, the fragrance distinguishes itself with its use of lavender from Provence, which is dried in the fields prior to extraction and distillation, giving it a more herbaceous scent. Tom Ford Beau de Jour, $128 to $180, at the Tom Ford boutique, Neiman Marcus, tomford.com. Steven Hempel ART NOTES Office of Cultural Affairs to reimagine public art and spread it throughout City Council districts, forging 11 new dialogues about history, community, and art experiences. Stay tuned for more in our March issue. Micro/Macro: Surface matters at Laura Rathe Fine Art and Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. The art spaces respectively roll out solos for Stallman Studio collaborators Stephen Strum and Jason Hallman of the Pacific Northwest Coast (February 22 – March 28), whose op-art 3D canvases, inspired by cellular structures, merge painting and sculpture, and Seattle-based Casey Curran, who crafts fanciful kinetic sculpture, installations, and asteroid paintings that look to the cosmos (through March 29). Valentine Bounty: At Deborah Colton Gallery, Japanese- American artist Noriko Shinohara unveils a mix of painting and drawing in "Cutie's Love Letter from Malta Island." Paired with Shinohara are works by her husband, internationally exhibited Ushio Shinohara, a contributor to the global Pop Art movement who has graced the cover of Artnews. Shinohara presents dramatic ab-ex gestural canvases in "Maltese Falcon" (both exhibitions, t h ro u g h F e b r u a r y 29). Catherine D.
