NEW DALLAS HOTELS WHERE WE'LL BE CHECKING IN EDITED BY REBECCA SHERMAN JUST UP I-45, DALLAS' HOTEL SCENE IS BOOMING, WITH A FLURRY OF STYLISH NEW SPOTS — AND A VERY GRAND RENOVATION — OPENING THROUGHOUT 2020. IT'S THE SECOND-LARGEST HOTEL BOOM IN THE NATION, JUST BEHIND NEW YORK CITY, AND THE FIRST TWO ON THE SCENE ARE THE VIRGIN HOTELS DALLAS AND HALL ARTS HOTEL WITH ITS BLOCKBUSTER ART COLLECTION. NEARING COMPLETION IS ROSEWOOD MANSION ON TURTLE CREEK'S REINVENTION OF ITS ICONIC DIGS WITH A PLUSH OVERHAUL BY DESIGNER THOMAS PHEASANT. D eveloped in partnership with Virgin's Sir Richard B r a n s o n a n d B i l l Hutchinson of Dunhill Partners, Virgin Hotels Dallas soars over the booming Dallas Design District with 268 guest rooms and two penthouse suites, and multiple venues for sipping and supping. Commons Club, a modern social club, is on the first floor, and Funny Library Coffee Shop is a communal workspace with hot pours of Laughing Man, the coffee brand co-founded by actor Hugh Jackman. Guest rooms have liberal doses of Virgin's signature red such as red SMEG fridges, (stocked, of course) and plush crimson sofas, along sliding privacy panels dividing sleeping and living areas, and Poliform Smart Closets. Virgin tapped Dallas-based Swoon the Studio and Austin's Joel Mozersky Design for the interiors, along with Dallas-based architecture firm 5G Studio (Forty Five Ten at Hudson Yards, AC Hotel Dallas, Omni Dallas). Lisa Collins Shaddock LIKE A VIRGIN N ow there's a place — and a chic and sublime one, at that — to lay your travel-weary head in the Dallas Arts District. The towering Hall Arts Hotel, with its sleek glass facade and commanding skyline views, is the only hotel in the country's largest contiguous arts district. Clocking in at 11 stories high with 183 guest rooms and 19 suites, it's a light-filled oasis amidst downtown's urban sprawl — part of a compound that includes Hall Arts Residences and Hall Arts Building, all just a stone's throw from I.M. Pei's Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, Foster + Partners-designed Winspear Opera House, and Rem Koolhaas-designed Wyly Theatre. Developed by powerhouse couple and art collectors Craig and Kathryn Hall, the hotel and compound house a powerful collection of international and local art, as well as commissioned works. HKS Architects designed the hotel, with interiors by Bentel & Bentel. Hall Arts Hotel, 1717 Leonard St., Dallas, hallartshotel.com. Billy Fong BLOCKBUSTER HALL ARTS HOTEL REDUX: ROSEWOOD MANSION ON TURTLE CREEK T he iconic Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek turns 40 this year — and what better way to mark the milestone than with a comprehensive redo by renowned designer Thomas Pheasant. The enhancements are part of the property's multi-year refurbishment. The hotel's 142 guest rooms and suites were unveiled in December, transformed with Pheasant's sophisticated, custom-designed millwork and furnishings. With soothing tone-on-tone palettes, these plush rooms are a dose of design therapy for gimlet eye travelers. On the walls are photographs of the building's original details and motifs dating to the 1920s when it was a private estate owned by Texas cotton magnate Sheppard King. The lobby, slated for completion later this spring, has a magnificent carved plaster dome in an ornate acorn motif, created by artisans from 90-year-old Casci Ornamental Plaster in Dallas, which did some of the estate's original plaster work.
