VISUAL TYPES WITH INSPIRATION BOARDS AND THEIR MODERN VERSION — PINTEREST BOARDS — ON HER MIND, AMY ADAMS ASKED EIGHT OF OUR FAVORITE CREATIVES TO SHARE IMAGES THAT CAUGHT THEIR EYE AND, IN THE PROCESS, GOT A GLIMPSE INSIDE THEIR HEADS. SHANNON CATLETT Illustrator LISA MOORE Alex Katz Co-owner, Cover Clothing 1. We are collaborating with Richard  Phillips on a charity project — a Cover Clothing limited-edition surf shirt. The scale paired with the realism and feeling in his work is so inspiring. I was in NYC before Christmas and happened to see a new Alex Katz show. It reminded me how much I love his work. It's pop but also has such mystery — completely timeless. Some of my favorites are the ones of his wife, Ada, at the water. 2. Choosing bright colors in iconic pieces equals happiness and confidence. I enjoy creating the space around me as a reflection of my style and feelings, and I am drawn to the clean comfort of American mid-century modern design. 2. London-based artist Anna Garforth made this awesome installation using nothing but tape on a wire fence. 3. I'd seen Chagall's ceiling at the opera house in Paris but had no idea he'd also done costumes for the stage! These are on display at the DMA right now — I would love to see them in motion. If you go, also look for his little-known collages that are part of the exhibit ... they are wonderful, too. 3. When I was beginning to design our resort collection, I found myself drawn to the feminine sexuality of the 1960s. I listened to music, watched movies and looked through photographs for inspiration. The feeling I came away with was more rebellious than the 1950s but more innocent than the 1970s — it felt perfect in a modern way. 4. The Advanced Style blog and book by Ari Seth Cohen features the exceptional street style of the 60-plus set. These images inspire me to just wear what makes me happy. Don't you want to be friends with this cool couple? 5. FRIDA KAHLO 4. This is the coolest video ever. I feel happy and inspired every time I watch it. IS AN INSPIRATION IN SO MANY WAYS. I LOVE HOW SHE LOOKS IN 5. Wool felt is fantastic as wall coverings, rugs, stools, chairs, skirts and bowls. It's cozy, interesting and 100 percent natural. THIS PHOTO FROM 1929, THE YEAR SHE MARRIED DIEGO RIVERA. THE COMBINATION OF THE 6. Wes Anderson and Quentin Tarantino write and direct rad films with so much style and unexpected humor. They make me think, and I appreciate their artistic quality. FEMININE WHITE DRESS, HUGE NECKLACE AND SHORT HAIR IS SO APPEALING. Aero store interior Womb chair BILLY MILNER Interior Designer ROBERT ROBERTSON Photographer Wes Anderson, Moonrise Kingdom 1. Vintage photographs evoke a mood, style and feeling of times gone by. I am attracted to specific antiques that make me feel connected to another life. 1. I had to include Thomas O'Brien's Aero Design in NYC. He is by far the most inspirational designer for me! 2. The written word and its design make me happy. 2. Drama, drama and more drama! From the headboard to the floors to the indirect light and the office perch — I love it all! Culture around the globe gets me going — Egypt has been my most amazing experience yet. 3. Colored glass with sunlight coming through is always terrific. I like how the bottles are arranged by color. I've done this for several clients that had sunrooms but no space for art. 4. We are all one of a kind. 5. There's nothing more inspiring than the mind of a child. Honest, pure, simple, creative and full of life. I think of myself as an adult child. I don't have to grow up any time soon. 6. Frank Lloyd Wright's masterpiece Fallingwater. Enough said. 7. I am intrigued by the beauty of hands — all they do, create and express. 5. I've always adored a wall of books, but this takes it to a whole other level. Arranging all the colors of the spines is a great idea. Fallingwater APRIL | PAGE 36 | 2013
