PAULA MINNIS PEGGY BENNETT Owner, Gaia Empowered Women Co-owner, Bennett.Elia advertising and branding agency As a textile lover, I was immediately drawn to the intricate pieces by this Louisiana artist during a recent Nasher group trip to New Orleans. Troy Dugas meticulously arranges vintage product labels to create mesmerizing compositions that appear woven. I can't even wrap my mind around the time each piece requires! All I know is that the results are stunning. 1. I have a weak spot for Geof Kern, who is an amazing photographer in Dallas. He shot this reflection of the Eiffel Tower in a mirror. His images are witty and classic at the same time. 2. If I were queen bee of an arty magazine, I would run it full bleed next to this image Helmut Newton shot for French Vogue in 1971. If you want to start that magazine, call me. I'm in. 2. Daria Werbowy in Maiyet, Spring 2013 campaign, shot on location in India. If I found it hard to justify spending the big bucks on designer clothing, Maiyet is a line that just might alleviate my guilt. The luxury label employs artisans and promotes entrepreneurship in places that need it most — a socially conscious brand after my own heart. 3. Stripes and polka dots never get old. I don't wear many prints, but I'll always do a navy stripe. The image on the right is a recent photo by Jenni Penni, a 22-year-old photography student in Finland. I love how timeless it feels. 4. The classic portrait on the left is by Geiko Hatsuko from around 1920. 5. Great fashion makes for great art. It's easy to shoot an expensive crocodile bag, harder to get a great shot featuring pleather! Here's an image from David Douglas Duncan, 1938, best known for his wartime photos. 6. The other is from artist Duane Michals — Alice's Mirror, 1974. Both with perfectly round, perennially photogenic frames. 3. Being such a craft nerd, I always find inspiration on P – I Made This... .S. 4. Clever craftsmanship by Brazilian designer Patricia Viera using leather to create a necklace in the style of a Hawaiian lei. I'd throw it on and pretend I'm on a trip to Oahu instead of a trip to Target. 5. Children displaced following the uprising in Syria have suffered severe trauma and disruption to their lives, according to an International Rescue Committee report. Looking at this image, I am so moved and inspired by children's resilience. Patricia Viera Hawaiian collar Troy Dugas SHANNON DRISCOLL Co-owner, Oil and Cotton Creative Exchange 1. I collect old hangers. To me, they are romantic, functional sculptures. 2. I love Agnes Martin's simple/complicated use of line and soft muted colors. Her work makes me feel quiet. 3. I grew up working at estate sales with my dad and quickly became obsessed with all things old. Erie Basin sifts through the dust and finds amazing treasures. Mourning jewelry brings out the Edward Gorey in me. Makes me want to picnic in an old cemetery. 4. I am deeply curious about the culture, art and history of the Southwest. The round shape of the Hopi hair wrapping, adobe buildings and desert cacti have inspired my most recent artwork. CALLIE WORKS-LEARY Owner, CityCraft fabric lounge and sewing boutique 1. Diana Vreeland's living room is an explosion of color and print. I love the look of saturated decorating. You only live once, and life is too short to decorate in greige. 2. I could listen to Brazilian radio on Pandora 24-7. Astrud Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim — so sexy and relaxing. 3. Early '70s sewing patterns are the best. A caftan is my Summer 2013 must-have. To be draped in fabric is so totally glamorous. And I plan to strike lots of dramatic poses like the women on the pattern covers. 5. Before opening Oil and Cotton, I was an art conservator and spent hours removing harmful tape from works of art on paper. Now I use neon tape to hold it all together. 4. Prints by Matt W. Moore remind me of modern quilts and inspire me to sew. I just Mod Podged the inside of the bathroom door in our sewing studio with fabric. Next up: every door in my house. 6. I GREW UP IN BALTIMORE, AND I LIKE TO STAY CONNECTED TO WHAT IS GOING ON IN THE ART COMMUNITY Nudashank Gallery in Baltimore THERE VIA THE NUDASHANK GALLERY. APRIL | PAGE 37 | 2013 6. Most of my vegetables have been grown in my own garden. It brings me so much happiness and inspires the way I cook. The more and more I garden, the less and less meat I eat.
