Josephine Durkin's Flora 1, 2013 Bespoke My Heart Saturday, May 4, chairman Michelle Moussa and honorary chairs Beth Ewing and Karla McKinley will fashion Bespoke, a customtailored fund-raiser at Dallas Contemporary. At this second annual white-glove dinner and auction, we anticipate serious jockeying for jewels, incredible travel packages and original works from the likes of Inez & Vinoodh. The proceeds further DC's mission to engage the community through exhibitions, lecture series and educational programs. With art direction from John Pomara, performance installations from Danielle Georgiou and her dance group DGDG, a live-feed video featuring footage of the evening's guests by Trent Straughan and visual styling from Grange Hall, we'd say this event nails "bespoke." MAGNUS UNNAR Michael: Biggest break: opening our new space. We had been in a shoebox of a space for five years after leaving the East Village, where we had been from 2004 to 2007. We were all sitting at one small desk, a little too close for comfort, and it was impossible to have any privacy. People would come in and drop off things for the editorial office, or the gallery director, not knowing that we were all right there. If your only morning ritual consists of a strong cup of coffee, Jessica Jesse has something in store for you. The co-founder and creative director of BuDhaGirl has developed a jewelry collection that strikes a unique balance between ornamentation and contemplation, as evidenced by the Deco-inspired Core cuff (in carnelian, jade, onyx or ivory colors) with a coffer lid that opens to reveal a hidden compartment intended to house a reminder … or, in Jesse's parlance, an intention. These miniature collectibles evoke spiritual iconography found throughout the world, including the Virgin of Guadalupe, Ganesha, Star of David and a Celtic Cross. Altogether, there are 36 reminders with simple affirmations ranging from a better memory to increased fortitude. Explains the Dallasite, "As our clients prepare for each day, we encourage them to take a moment and focus 30 seconds on what they want. We believe that intentions define outcomes and that contemplative practices lead to better brain health. BuDhaGirl products serve as a visual reminder for purposeful interaction." But even those who raise an eyebrow at the esoteric will succumb to this collection's surface appeal, i.e., the effortlessly cool all-weather rubber bangles dusted in gold, the stingray wrist wraps and multi-link temple chain. All proof that style with substance makes a very fashionable statement. $35 to $395, at Ceylon et Cie; budhagirl. com. Amy Adams [ [ DALLAS ART FAIR Michael: I started the journal in 1999, during my first year of school at Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, Massachusetts. Julia was an au pair in Julia Dippelhofer the next town over, and we both signed and Michael up for a black-and-white photography Nevin, The course at the school. I had just published Journal Gallery, Brooklyn the first issue of the journal at Kinko's and gave her a copy. The photography teacher basically set us up by suggesting Julia and I work on an assignment together. After graduating, we moved to NY and shortly after took over a large garage space on East 6th Street in the East Village, which became the journal office. The gallery grew out of having so much space and involved the people we were working with for the magazine. It was a really exciting time with so many people coming by. We never planned Christen Wilson to have a commercial gallery; we just wanted to show art, have fun and inspire others. \One day a collector came in and bought 25 drawings, which was really the start of the gallery. Up until that time, we had only really thought about the magazine, and we liked the energy and immediacy that the gallery added. It's the original Dallas gallery organization, and in many ways, the gold standard: DADA. Everyone in the Texas art world knows this pitch-perfect acronym stands for the Dallas Art Dealers Association, a respected coterie of galleries, museums and arts nonprofits that amplifies the dialogue around art and its acquisition in this metropolis. Founded in 1985 by arts maven June Mattingly, DADA also benefits visual art students through The Edith Baker Art Scholarship and Artist Career Development Fund (including a new scholarship through The Kenneth R. Craighead Jr. and Steven L. Green Foundation for Arts and Education). One of DADA's signature events beckons this month: the free Spring Gallery Walk, when its 35 members pull out the art stops Saturday, April 20, 2 to 8 pm. For the athletic, there's even a Bike Swarm (also free), 1:30 to 5 pm, beginning at the Oak Cliff Cultural Center that leads to the JD Miller's Mojave Morning, 2013, at Samuel thriving Design Lynne Galleries District. PaperCity steps up as media sponsor. We'll be at Talley Dunn Gallery, staking out Sam Reveles' meditative canvases; eyeing the wild oil explosions of JD Miller at Samuel Lynne Galleries; headed to the McKinney Avenue Contemporary to be awed by Michael Bise's drawings addressing life and death; and investigating more than 50 new works by the stable of Craighead Green Gallery.
