THE KIMIKO AND JOHN POWERS COLLECTION OF JAPANESE ART; PHOTO PAUL HESTER Yosa Buson's Rocks, 1783, at MFAH KENNON EVETT F rom the sublime to the wacky, August has it all. First up, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, mounts once-in-a-lifetime treasures from The Kimiko and John Powers Collection of Japanese Art, one of the top private collections of Japanese art in the world. MFAH curator Christine Starkman coaxed Kimiko Powers to let these fragile riches, which are usually sequestered in a vault in Denver, travel to the MFAH, where they represent 1,000 years of Japanese creativity, spanning serene 8th-century Buddhist sculpture to dramatic 18th-century scroll painting. The most surprising aspect of the show now on view in the Law Building is the shocking modernity of many of its inclusions (though September 23) … Speaking of the Powers, this pioneering couple was also famed for their propensity for Pop art. We know they would have approved of attorney-turned-artist/gallerist/ curator Randall Kallinen, whose "Cornucopia, Incorporated," the second-ever show at his Kallinen Randall Kallinen's Cheeseburger, 2012, at Kallinen Contemporary PC Acquire This month's PaperCity Acquire taps Texas native Aimee Jones, whose high-octane canvases have us scrambling for adjectives: neo-geo, ab-ex mated with expressionism plus touches of fractiles and cubism, overlaid with a net of riotous neon, joined by a proliferation of found objects, assemblage and some pretty fine drawing. In other words, mindblowing. If Timothy Leary still walked the earth, Jones' creations would grace his walls. Her aesthetic also Aimee Jones' I Got This One, 2012 incorporates a sly fashion component, with a wink and a nod to '80s acid-washed bravura. Jones' credentials include a BFA in painting from the University of Houston (2003) and a decade spent as a catalyst and provocateur, exhibiting in some of Texas' most celebrated art spaces, from Austin's Women and Their Work to Houston's storied nonprofits Project Row Houses, the now-shuttered Commerce Street Artists Warehouse (CSAW), Buffalo Bayou Art Park and, most recently, Free Press Summer Fest, where she completed an edgy outdoor installation for a pedestrian bridge connecting Memorial Drive and Allen Parkway. She's also shown in Miami, Chicago, Kansas Louis Vuitton has opened temporary men's and women's boutiques to host those collections until LV reopens its newly expanded Global Store in November.
