MARK D. SIKES' NEW COLLECTION FOR CHADDOCK FUSES HIS FAVORITE DESIGN INSPIRATIONS, FOUND IN SOME OF AMERICA'S MOST CLASSICALLY BEAUTIFUL INTERIORS. BY REBECCA SHERMAN I nterior designer Mark D. Sikes' fresh-scrubbed good looks, as well as his penchant for high- water khakis and loafers sans socks, is an updated nod to classic American style. His new furniture collection for Chaddock reflects the way classic American rooms are dressed, with traditional designs from a melting pot of cultures, pulled together in a modern way. The 37-piece collection incorporates English, French, and Asian influences — with a little neoclassical and wicker thrown in. His cane-seat Aster settee is based on an antique owned by Bunny Mellon, which was auctioned in 2014 after her death. A ladder-back chair and a trio of charming cabriole-leg occasional tables can be painted in 12 Farrow & Ball colors in four finishes. Upholstered sofas and lounge chairs are customizable with tufting and nine different skirts and leg styles. Other pieces, such as a hand-painted Larkspur chinoiserie cocktail table and Violet lounge chair with gilded arm detailing, were inspired by antiques Sikes has purchased over the years. He's an admitted "brown furniture" fan, and some of his neoclassical designs gleam with polished dark wood finishes, including the Marigold pedestal with urn and Dogwood display cabinet, while the Foxglove dining table has carved rosettes that mimic antique ivory detailing. Chinoiserie, caning, slipcovers, lattice, and brass all work together in Sikes' beautiful world. "It's the mix without the match," he said during a Zoom webinar to more than 1,000 design professionals on May 5, when the collection was launched. Sikes and Chaddock CEO Andrew Crone had been working on the collection long before High Point Market was canceled in April due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "I've always relied on High Point to introduce my collections," Sikes said, "But this is a new and exciting way to show it." Sikes, based in Los Angeles, has projects around the country that have been published in Architectural Digest, Veranda, and Elle Decor, among others, and his second book launches this fall, which he will discuss and sign at Texas Design Week Dallas, Friday, September 25, 2020 (texasdesignweek.com). His collaboration with Chaddock is the latest among a raft of partnerships that include fabrics for Schumacher, lighting for Hudson Valley Lighting, bedding and rugs for Annie Selke, tabletop for Blue Pheasant, and wicker designs for Soane London.
