MARGIELA HEADS NORTH MAKING WAVES T he elusive Martin Margiela is back! Well … Actually, he's not, but the documentary that explores the life of the iconic fashion designer received its public launch last month. PaperCity covered Martin Margiela: In His Own Words when it premiered at the DOC NYC 2019 film festival last November. Written and directed by Reiner Holzemer (whose previous works include the Dries Van Noten documentary), the film illustrates Margiela's philosophy on design. Spanning 20 years, the documentary explores his life and his most important designs through drawings, notes, and personal i t e m s a l o n g s i d e interviews of Margiela himself (whose face is never shown) and other fashion luminaries, critics, and historians as the designer prepares for the first retrospective of his work at Paris' Palais Galliera. Martin Margiela: In His Own Words can be viewed online at margiela.oscilloscope. net and at select theaters. M aison Margiela has partnered with The North Face for the Autumn/Winter 2020 lineup. W hat do you get when you fuse Maison Margiela's signature Tabi flat sneaker with Reebok's Instapump Fury? Quite simply … a lot. The Autumn/ Winter 2020 collaboration between the American sneaker giant and French fashion house is certainly no wallflower. It may be the future of fashion sneakers — or it may be something else entirely. Margiela press calls it the "statement shoe for the age of the cyber-industrial revolution," available in flat and heeled versions. Utilizing Reebok's pump- inflation technology that manually adapts the fit to the wearer, the sneaker sports both brand's logos and features a prominent foam-and- rubber outsole and four colorways: all black; all white; yellow, black, and red; and white, blue, and red. There are also black patent-leather versions, including one in faux crocodile. From $1,250, at maisonmargiela.com. Might we recommend surfing … If that sounds like your thing, we have the surfboard for you: the latest Kim Jones/Shawn Stussy collaboration for Dior. The streamlined board has elongated curves, a special fin design, and subtle Dior colors — Stassy says it "seems to dance on the ocean." Each board requires 72 hours of finish work at the UWL surfboard workshop in La Rochelle, France, and is decked out in a hypnotic Dior collage motif of gray and ice blue. Production limited to 100 boards; exclusively through Dior. The collaboration merges the outdoor specialist's Expedition System with the conceptual design work of Margiela. Renowned for its customizable approach using detachable, layered pieces to combat the elements, The North Face has produced rock-solid outdoor clothing for years. Margiela reimagined keystone garments from the Expedition System collection using patterns that mimic the circle concept of the MM6 collection. Make tracks with a hooded Himalayan coat, cape-style Mountain Kaban, zippered Denali jacket (lengthened into a coat dress and shortened as a sweater), and a compact Nuptse puffer jacket.
