When DaviD No LoNger Thrills M ichelangelo's David is wonderful … and very white. When we laid orbs on Barry X Ball's otherworldly, classically inspired statues sculpted in translucent pink Iranian onyx, rich blue sodalite, French Rouge du Roi, and golden honeycomb calcite, the blinders were lifted. The exquisite grain and wild pattern in these dramatically colored stones enhance and shade his heroic-sized subjects. The Nasher Sculpture Center mounts Ball's first American retrospective, "Barry X Ball: Remaking Sculpture," extended though January 3, 2021. Catherine D.
