letter editor Hunt Slonem T his is our month to rise above the fray, transcend COVID-19, presidential rhetoric, and racial unrest; we are vigilant but also yearning for fall, the holidays, and normalcy. Good things come in this month's issue: A thrilling $30 million renovation of the beloved Rothko Chapel is complete (page 24), and a Menil Collection doubleheader has opened (page 80). New design objects abound, from Alessandra Branca's new Casa Branca collection to Hermès rugs and plaster artist Stephen Antonson's hardware collection X Nest Studio (page 60). The Round Top Fall Antiques Show finally has solid dates (October 15 to November 1) with an expected large turnout for this twice-annual extravaganza. In Round Top news, Armando and Cinda Palacios (Armandos restaurant in Houston and Mandito's, Popi Burger, and Lulu's restaurants in Round Top) are opening Hotel Lulu in the center of town, while Mark Massey has developed the new Minden Square, also in the center of Round Top, where Round Top Brewing, owned by Paul and Brooke Michie, is slated to open late fall/ early winter. So much news — follow it in our special section (beginning on page 90). I'm headed to Dallas for the opening days of Kips Bay Decorator Show House Dallas (through October 25). The rooms are glorious, from what I've seen on Instagram; as a media sponsor, PaperCity will have gone live with the room reveal by the time this issue is in your hands, so go to papercitymag.com if you've not trekked north for an early look. Houston designers who created rooms: Lauren Rottet, Michael Viviano and Catherine Viviano of Viviano Viviano, Margaret Naeve, Kevin Spearman, and Lauren Hudson of Wells Design, along with 21 other designers from Dallas and around the U.S. While in Dallas, I'll see designer Thomas Pheasant's extraordinary renovation of the Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek, with its hand-carved plaster ceiling in the entry rotunda, created by Casci Ornamental Plaster (pages 68 and 70). We'll be toasting fall here, there, and everywhere. Holly Moore Editor in Chief holly@papercitymag.com 12
