PhotograPhy Jonathan ZiZZo. sutherlanD's MoDernist hoMe T o celebrate the opening of the much-anticipated Kips Bay Decorator Show House Dallas, Ann and David Sutherland and Veranda magazine (national media sponsor of Kips Bay Dallas) co-hosted a de- lightful dinner. I was privileged to be included, so I pulled out the chinois- erie-inspired print suit that I'd scored right before COVID wiped all events from my datebook — complete with a mask made from the extra fabric when the trousers were hemmed, as matchy-matchy seemed perfect for a first night on the town. After my de- signer date, Michelle Nussbaumer, told me she had no idea how to "sum- mon Uber," I secured our chariot, and we made our way to the Sutherlands' modernist Preston Hollow home. The intimate group of designers and dignitaries in town for the show engaged in a sprawling conversa- tion that encompassed trade secrets ("Who did you find locally to do that gorgeous lacquer on the walls of your room?") and what we were all cur- rently bingeing on Netflix. As always, the consensus seemed to be Ozark and Schitt's Creek. Inevitably, my final question to my table partners was: "Why did none of you put a tele- vision in your room?" This brought unbridled laughter, then comic mem- ories of armoires and the massive console televisions of years past.
