Credited as the artist who shattered the barrier between photography and fine art, Sherman's multi-million-dollar auction records are propelled by the now-iconic "Untitled Film Stills" series. Forty years later, these proto- feminist, photo-based artworks are more topical than ever, skewering proscribed gender roles and sending up cinematic tropes of Hollywood heroines. Besides culling the film stills, Fondation Louis Vuitton's blockbuster features 300-some works, alternately vulnerable or visceral images with the photographer as protagonist. Highlights encompass her emblematic Fashion, History Portraits, Disasters, Headshots, Clowns, Society Portraits, Murals, and Flappers, while pulling back the curtain on the latest artfully posed portraits casting herself in the (dis) guise of males or couples.
