letter publisher MISAEL RODRIGUEZ I 'm probably not the only one who can't believe it, but here we are: March 2021. Looking back on what's transpired since our whole world changed last year — and looking ahead — I am both optimistic and reflective. After all, it's the beginning of spring, a time for better weather and gardening, the start of patio cocktails and the social season. As we were closing this issue mid-February, I had just attended the long-awaited reopening of Dallas Contemporary, which had been closed for 10 months due to the pandemic. Those expert planners at DC hosted a perfect, socially distanced cocktail party and opening to showcase three new exhibitions: Italian photographer Paolo Roversi's first U.S. solo museum exhibition, "Birds," focusing on his relationship with Comme des Garçons designer Rei Kawakubo; Chinese artist Liu Xiaodong's "Borders" presentation of works created at the U.S.-Mexico border; and Austin artist Ariel René Jackson's debut of a new video piece, "Doubt & Imagination," sponsored by PaperCity. At the end of this month, don't miss the opening of the Yoshitomo Nara career survey "I Forgot Their Names and Often Can't Remember Their Faces but Remember Their Voices Well." The opening was delayed because of logistical difficulties, but after a year devoid of in-person art experiences, we love any excuse to pop into our city's gem of contemporary art. Also last month, I virtually attended the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's annual Saint Valentine's Day Luncheon & Fashion Show. My late father was diagnosed with leukemia in 2005, so the cause is close to my heart — and the PaperCity-sponsored luncheon is always a bright spot on our calendars. Like most events and social to-dos, chair Melinda Knowles took the event virtual, with a can't- miss runway show from Highland Park Village, produced by Jan Strimple. Nothing has made me more ready to shop for spring! I always carve out some time at the beginning of spring to clean house. This year, though, the PaperCity office took that idea to new heights. By the time you read this letter, we will have moved into pearly new offices at Riverbend in the heart of the Design District. The location couldn't be more perfect: We're now in close proximity to the Dallas Art Fair HQ and the site for the 2021 fair, set for September 30 - October 3. PaperCity has been a partner of the Dallas Art Fair since its inception, and we can't wait to support the team as it adapts to art-fair life in the age of COVID. While this spring will certainly look different — and hopefully be much cheerier — than last, I would be remiss if I didn't thank everyone who helped us through the last 12 months. Publishing a magazine from a distance has been challenging, but we are grateful to have such wonderful partners and readers. May we all look onward and into a beautiful season ahead.
