R obert Stilin's interiors are cultured and smart, with a layered and textural look. The AD100 and Elle Decor A-List designer is based in New York and the Hamptons, with residential projects that include a duplex penthouse on Fifth Avenue, a family compound in Louisville, Kentucky, an oceanfront house in the Hamptons, an executive office in Seattle, and a contemporary estate in Bel Air. An avid collector of contemporary art — he serves on the Director's Council at the Whitney Museum of American Art — Stilin often layers his interiors with noteworthy contemporary artworks, as well as postwar European and American furniture. More than a dozen of his projects have been published in a new monograph, Robert Stilin: Interiors (Vendome). Mayer Rus, who edited the book, is a huge fan, writing in the introduction that Stilin "approaches his work with a distinctly curatorial eye, assembling furniture and objects of far-flung periods and pedigrees, high and low, refined and rustic … The designer's talent, however, is not simply a matter of curatorial prowess. Stilin arranges the elements of his craft more like players in a drama than mere objects in space." Garde showroom hosts designer Robert Stilin Thursday, September 23, 7 to 9 pm, with cocktails, salon talk, and book signing, as part of Texas Design Week Dallas. TXDW is a ticketed event; for tickets and complete schedule, go to texasdesignweek.com. TEXAS DESIGN WEEK DALLAS SMART, STYLISH, AND SO VERY STILIN By Rebecca Sherman.
