DAVID SHUTTS PHOTOGRAPHY, KIM COFFMAN, DAVID BROWN Literary Trio: Barbara Bush Foundation, Inprint and Center for Literacy WELCOME HOME Chairman Franci Crane, Martin Amis at Inprint H ometown bibliophiles came out in droves to improve literacy. The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy held its annual Celebration of Reading at the Hobby Center. Chairmen Maria and Neil Bush and 1,800 other guests looked on as honorary Foundation chairman Barbara Bush took the stage, joined by former President George H.W. Bush. Authors Jon Meacham, Mary Neal, Mark Shriver, and Brad Thor read from their novels. Houston Center for Literacy took a page from the same book with its annual Mayor's Literacy Leadership Award Breakfast. Mayor Annise Parker underscored the importance of improving our town's literacy rates, with chairmen Ellie Francisco and Leisa Holland-Nelson among the supportive early birds. Finally, Inprint toasted 30 years at its annual Poets & Writers Ball at Houston Country Club. Chairmen Franci Crane, Mark Wawro, and Michael Zilkha joined 400 fellow bookies for a night of lauding the literary arts, featuring salon-style readings by authors Miah Arnold, Lauren Berry, and Jericho Brown, followed by an after-dinner talk by celebrated British wordsmith Martin Amis.
