he arrived in Paris to apprentice under r e n o w n e d t r u n k maker and packer Romain Maréchal and in 1854 founded his own maison. A mix of relationship- b u i l d i n g a n d intuition led to his appointment a s t r u n k m a k e r and packer to Empress Eugenie, which was furthered by his ingenuity in creating waterproof trunks with flat lids, transforming their functionality. To mark the 2 0 0 t h a n n i v e r s a r y, the house that Louis built has been hard at work celebrating his remarkable ascent and all that would follow. In August, Vuitton b e g a n u n v e i l i n g windows to showcase the talents of 200 friends and visionaries who were tasked with reconstructing, repurposing, projecting, and refashioning the original LV Trunk, a box measuring 50 by 50 by 100 cm into a vessel of expression. The invitees are themselves symbolic of the gesture and concept. Their talents, backgrounds, and identities stretch across the globe and include writers, curators, dancers, poets, Olympians, and designers — from instantly recognizable names such as Sou Foujimoto, Frank Gehry, and BTS to lesser known but imminently deserving creatives from all walks of life. This is one of several initiatives the house has introduced to celebrate its bicentennial. The project stretches throughout its web of stores across the globe, as each displays the trunks that symbolize Vuitton's origins and its aspirations towards the future.
