I n t h e surrealist world of a r t i s t s François- Xavier and Claude Lalanne, anything was possible: A life-size rhinoceros doubles as a desk, a giant cabbage sprouts chicken legs, and a living room is invaded by a flock of sheep. The best-known works of the French husband-and-wife duo, known collectively as Les Lalanne, were produced from the late '60s through the '80s, but their careers were long and successful. Les Lalanne became darlings of the fashion world, with commissions for Yves Saint Laurent, Hubert de Givenchy, Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Jacobs, and John Galliano. Today, their works are highly collectible and found in prestigious private collections and museums around the world. By Rebecca Sherman auctions at Rockefeller Center and online — the first Les Lalanne sale of this scope ever held in the U.S. The trove is from the private collection of the artists' daughter, Madame Marie Lalanne, and includes major sculptures such as Gorille Consolé, the Grand Poisson Paysage, the Trois Moutons de Peter, the Pomme de Jardin, and the Choupatte as well as jewelry and works on paper. The collection, which is expected to fetch at least $20 million, will be exhibited at Christie's galleries at Rockefeller Center prior to the sale.
