T he ever-chic Lauren Santo Domingo, founder of Moda Operandi, has been named the first artistic director for the Tiffany Home collection. Her first release features new tabletop collections, including Tiffany Berries, Tiffany T True, Tiffany Wisteria, Tiffany Toile, Tiffany Audubon, and Valse Bleue. The partnership coincides with the reopening of the Fifth Avenue flagship store this month; the new Home collections will be available at Tiffany & Co. stores and tiffany.com, with a selection at modaoperandi.com. W hen doors open this month at the new L e l e S a d o u g h i boutique in River Oaks District — Sadoughi's second in Texas — devotees of her bejeweled headbands and myriad accessories will find a colorful jewel box of fashion inspiration. Basket Books & Art now holds court in Montrose, interjecting a needed dose of arts and letters into our scene. Husband-and- wife owners Laura Hughes and Edwin Smalling bring East Coast credentials to their endeavor, as well as Houston roots (on her side). Sited in a handsome vintage commercial structure, Basket is next door to a neighborhood landmark: an office building that boasts David Adickes' anthropomorphic telephone sculpture perched on its roof. It's an appropriate marker leading to a place that not only stocks a trove of art books, artist-made zines, desk-size sculpture, and intimately scaled works on paper but also features a sizable art gallery. In fact, the entire second floor is given over to rotating exhibitions. Hughes and Smalling relocated from New York during pandemic times two years ago and opened Basket Books & Art last May. He wields an MFA from Yale; she holds a PhD in French from NYU. Houston was a natural destination for the couple, as Hughes (a St. John's School alum) grew up here. "We're focused on small and independent publishers and the highest quality of experimental literature," Hughes says. "We have a section that's called Thought, which is a compilation of philosophy theory, cultural studies, history, new approaches. We're interested in publishers, editors, writers, artists who are jewelry, sunglasses, and more. Of special note is a store exclusive: the Houston-themed headband shining with gilded, hand- sewn charms including boots, western hats, Lone Star State stars, and more. Sadoughi, who moved from NYC to Dallas, has enveloped the boutique with her wallpaper, the latest addition to her ever-growing collections — peel-and- stick designs that Sadoughi introduced in collaboration with manufacturer WallPops in January.
