Anspon S tart your fall viewing at Liliana Bloch Gallery, one of the most tenacious and avant-garde dealers in Texas, as well as a terrific talent scout, early on showing work by artists such as Letitia Huckaby, Leigh Merrill, and Venice Biennale-exhibited Simón Vega. Bloch opens her season with Dallas-based Kathy Lovas, who traverses categories and media while being known as an artist's artist. Her solo, "Indexicality, the Archive, and the Frame," doubles as an ambitious museum- level retrospective. The installation interweaves photography, feminism, and social consciousness, informed by wit and memory (through November 11). The Meadows Museum unveils a glorious antidote for our times with the canvases of Spanish painter Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (1863–1923). Culled from American private collections, the works embody Sorolla's contributions to Impressionism (through January 7). Holly Johnson Gallery mounts an exhibition that challenges us to slow down and contemplate geologic time. "Michael Young: Strata Books & Verb-ers," presents two concurrent series of recent drawings on paper by the Austin-based artist whose CV boasts important museum collections, from MoMA to L.A.'s MOCA. Young's intuitive minimal works not only reference pictographs and glyphs but contain sands and sediments personally collected from deserts in the great American West and the Kalahari in Botswana and Namibia (through November 11). Just in: Chloe Chiasson's "Keep Left at the Fork" makes a dramatic statement at Dallas Contemporary. The small- town-Texas-reared painter, now residing in Brooklyn, adds three-dimensional elements to expansive interpretations about American tropes while addressing nonconforming sexualities. Nostalgic as well as now, Chiasson's heroically scaled work both embraces and confronts the viewer in her first entrance upon the museum stage (October 13 – March 17, 2024). Remember Seth Davidow and celebrate his eye by basking in the artworks he loved at the art space he co-founded with his mother, Joan Davidow, in the most poignant show of this fall: "to see is a gift: Seth Davidow collection" at SITE131. Revel in works ranging from international icons Thomas Ruff and Callum Innes to American legends Richard Diebenkorn and Dallas' own Linda Ridgway (through December 9). Road Trip: More next month on "Annie Leibovitz at Work," which will make us all head to Bentonville, Arkansas, for the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art's expansive exhibition on the photographer who daringly mines magic from faces of fame, forging images that become unforgettable as they grace the covers of such publications as Vanity Fair, Vogue, and Rolling Stone. What's new are recent portraits created for Crystal Bridges, representing Leibovitz's first museum commission (through January 29, 2024).
