(Continued) chose pieces that were very playful in their form, but also ones that reference the mid- century design movement," Johnston says. Original white terrazzo floors throughout created a neutral backdrop for eye-catching shapes and colors. A light-drenched entryway gets the fun going with vibrant artwork and a blue CC-Tapis rug "that looks like a brushstroke across the floor," he says. The living room was designed for entertaining, so there's a curvy lavender sofa by Lee Kravet that seats many, along with a comfortable blue chair by Moooi and a mid-century inspired yellow wingback. A tall cabinet opens to reveal a hidden bar. "The cabinet was all white and very mid-century, so we lacquered the inside pink for a surprise when you open it up," Johnston says. Underfoot, the rug's mind- bending dot pattern is a color progression of yellows, greens, and blues. The family room, which was previously renovated by Interloop—Architecture, is where the couple and their toddler often watch TV. "We didn't want the television to be this big black hole in the room, so we lacquered the wall behind it in rich blue so that it largely disappears into the environment," Johnston says. This is a spirited, happy space. A pair of plump swivel chairs are upholstered in a zesty Pollack fabric reminiscent of Keith Haring's expressive lines, and a couple of yellow bouclé ottomans rise up off the floor on chunky legs like spiders. Even the burl- wood coffee table is shaped like a flower. The dining room's beautiful bones were also provided by Interloop—Architecture, a backdrop that Johnston turned into a daring canvas. "We wanted to bring in some of the bright colors the clients initially selected, so we designed a lacquered installation of angular shapes on the cabinets, which creates a dynamic backdrop to the dining setting," Johnston says. The clients were thrilled; The design firm has since been enlisted to redo the kitchen, bedrooms, and an outdoor area. Johnston is ready for the challenge. "I love the notion that interiors can speak to the inner child in all of us," he says. In the foyer, a CC-Tapis rug, Norman Cherner chair from 1stDibs, and ottoman by Rene Cazares in Fabricut leather. Vintage light fixture from Italy. Artworks by Daniel Adenitan, right, and Guy Gee.
