By Rebecca Sherman Top: Douglas Friedman. The Marfa Collection by Douglas Friedman for Lobmeyr. A Toast to the Wild, Wild West D ouglas Friedman — whose photographs for top designers around the world appear regularly in such publications as Wallpaper, Vanity Fair, and Architectural Digest — has collaborated on a limited-edition collection for Viennese glassmaker Lobmeyr that takes inspiration from the rich iconography of the region around his ranch in Marfa, Texas. "The designs are deeply personal, drawing from the natural beauty and motifs that define West Texas, as well as cheeky nods to cowboy culture," he says. Leonid and Louise Rath, the sixth generation to head up design at Lobmeyr, transformed his mood boards into intricate illustrations that include a cowboy on a horse, cacti, donkeys, a rattlesnake, scorpions, and a montage of ropes, boots, and hats. The Marfa Collection consists of six sleek tumblers and pitcher that are hand-blown and painted in Lobmeyr's studio in Vienna, which was founded in 1823. Perhaps Lobmeyr's most famous designer was Josef Hoffmann who helped shaped Viennese Modernism and founded the Weiner Werkstätte movement in the early 1900s. Adolf Loos also designed collections, and more recently Ted Muehling. Friedman is in fine company. ABASK, an online company that represents artisans and makers around the globe such as Lobmeyr, suggested the collaboration during the course of Friedman's Long Island home restoration project. "I had to have Lobmeyr's sensational Series B glasses for the bar — they're truly exquisite design icons," he says. "When we were discussing the curation, ABASK's buying director suggested the possibility of a collaboration with the Lobmeyr team, and I naturally jumped at the chance." The Marfa Collection by Douglas Friedman for Lobmeyr, $245 - $545, at abask.com. 32
