GARDEN & GUN APRÈS ANTIQUES DINNER TEXAS STATE OF MIND T his Yule, add to or jump-start a collection spun around image-makers steeped in Texas, at Red & White Gallery. This small-town gallery — curated by the First Couple of Fayetteville, Joan and Jerry Herring — unfurls a group show of recent and legacy work by nine Texas talents encompassing oil on canvas, watercolor, photography, and the 19th-century technique of scratchboard. In time for gifting, bask in Mark Kohler's classic cowboys; photographs by Laura Wilson, who served as Richard Avedon's assistant on In the American West; Emil Knodell's photographic observations around the hamlet of Fayetteville; and William Anzalone, who has devoted more than a half century to studying figures, fields, and farms in the Round Top environs. Rounding out this showcase are 1986 Texas Artist of the Year Charles Schorre's intuitive abstractions informed by nature, Sally Maxwell's intricate scratchboards of the animal kingdom, lush watercolors dissolving into abstraction by Mary Quiros, Judy Elias Hill's timeless takes on land and sky, and rugged vistas of the great American West by Texas-raised Stephen Henry.
