DocStars An Evening with O utside the Texas Instruments Biomedical Engineering and Sciences Building, a guest pulled the valet aside and whispered, "So, do y'all have the cakes again this year?" After all, there are many things to love about An Evening with DocStars — not the least of which is the little cake the valet places in each car at the end of the night. The valet replied, "I'm not allowed to say." Presented by The Cary Council, the event celebrates the recipients of its Early- Stage Research Grants at UT Southwestern Medical Center. This year, three researchers each received a $50,000 seed grant to help fuel their critical research efforts in North Texas: Sarah Lieber, MD, MSCR; Ethan Sanford, MD; and Anezi Uzendu, MD, FACC. The research projects include, respectively, improving the lives of patients after liver transplants, reducing the risk of brain injury in critically ill children, and empowering Dallas students to save lives by transforming CPR education in schools. In partnership with Southwestern Medical Foundation, the 21 researchers supported Photography Ren Morrison and Scott Booth A Celebration of the Future of Medicine at Dallas' UT Southwestern by The Cary Council, which is chaired by Josie Sewell, have secured more than $21 million in additional funding during the past nine years. Lara and Brian Pryor co-chaired the sold-out DocStars evening. More than 300 guests sipped cocktails while trying their hand at six interactive stations that showcased leading-edge technology from UT Southwestern — including suturing a teddy-bear patient and conducting a sonogram or laparoscopy. Afterwards, valets once again placed a Bundtlet from Nothing Bundt Cakes in the passenger's seat of each car (along with the latest PaperCity). Clearly, a little treat at the end of the night that's doc approved.
