GREGORYCOPIET flooring, sculpted paneling, white marble marquetry, de Gournay hand-painted and embroidered wall coverings, and Maison Baguès crystal chandeliers. Despite its aristocratic roots, the hotel is less grand and more intimate, with a succession of salons and living spaces that include a library, bar, and hidden cigar lounge drenched in dramatic red chinoiserie wallpaper by de Gournay. The Winter Garden, set in Chopard's former watch-repair atelier, is a dazzling space set under a glass roof and wrapped in a mosaic with charming monkeys, butterflies, toucans, and leopards. 1-placevendome.com/en. Rebecca Sherman 1, PLACE VENDÔME, PARIS W ith just 10 rooms and five suites, 1, Place Vendôme is a jewel box of a hotel filled with exquisite design elements worthy of its prominent address in one of Paris' most storied arrondissements. Housed in two historic 18th-century mansions reimagined by Parisian interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon, the hotel is the vision of Karl Scheufele III and his family, owners of Swiss jeweler and watchmaker Chopard, which has a boutique at street level. The mansions were individually designed in 1723 by Pierre Perrin, secretary to the Sun King, and Armand- Claude Mollet, architect of the Élysée Palace. The Scheufeles enlisted French artisans to bring the original interiors back to life — a process that took four years and included restoring antique moldings, centuries-old wood beams, and an 18th-century fireplace in the entry. Craftspeople created new wrought ironwork, Versailles parquet C elebrated London interior architect and designer Martin Brudnizki (Annabel's, London; The Knox Residences, Auberge Resorts Collection, Dallas; Splendido, Portofino) and architect Perkins Eastman have transformed a McKim, Meade & White Gilded Age mansion and adjacent 24-story glass tower into a traveler's fantasy. In the lobby are grand arched windows, antique mirrors, cabinets of curiosities filled with crystals, and a large custom-made tapestry by artist Pae White. Rooms are decorated with Murano glass chandeliers, wardrobes evoking traditional Chinese cabinets, and pagoda-style lamps, in an exuberant color palette of green, pink, and yellow. thefifthavenuehotel.com.
