the Bower." In dialogue with the 177-acre property, the al fresco show aligned with Surls' 80th birthday. After a two-year run, that exhibition's closing party took place on a perfect weekend this spring. The afternoon concurrently marked the next chapter — the official launch of the Surls + Locke Museum of Texas Art and its first exhibition saluting Texas artistic greats. Thrillingly, art seekers witnessed a museum inauguration in a new white- cube gallery space showcasing "Heard of G.O.A.T.s, Volume 1," the nonprofit's debut exhibition. This Surls-curated show spanned generations, encompassing 21 Texas artists across many media, from the late Jim Love's 1989 welded-steel tensile blossom to Venice Biennale-exhibited James Drake's 2025 pastel of bird nests. Forget about institutions with closely guarded chains of command. Here, at the Surls + Locke Museum of Texas Art, nature and artmaking are celebrated. With a board of directors led by the founders, a burgeoning collection jump-started with career-spanning artworks by Surls and Locke, a professional executive director (Stephan Grot of the KANEKO museum of contemporary art in Omaha has been appointed), and a bold plan, the Surls + Locke Museum of Texas Art is one of the most buoyant stories of the year. Rather than waiting until 2030 to roll out the museum as fully envisioned — a 30,000-square- foot, 40-acre, $53 million art-and-nature destination on land donated by the artists/ founders — "the board decided to come out of the gate now," says Surls. Stay tuned. "Heard of G.O.A.T.s, Volume 1," at Surls + Locke Museum of Texas Art, through June 22; Wednesday - Thursday, Saturday - Sunday, 10 am to 4 pm; 832.480.5452, surlslockemuseum.org.
