The trove of sculptures on view at the Kimbell span more than 700 years, from the late 5th century BC to the early 4th century AD, with a focus on the High Imperial period (1st - 2nd centuries AD). Organized thematically, the exhibition unfolds across six sections: Icons of the Torlonia Collection, Ideal Bodies and Model Behavior, Strategies of Succession, Restoration and Reconstruction, Torlonia Excavations, and Death and Remembrance. Highlights include Portrait of Hadrian, a finely carved likeness of the famed emperor; the monumental Sarcophagus Depicting the Labors of Hercules, paired with a carved lid bearing a reclining couple; and the Statue of a Resting Goat, a hybrid of ancient sculpture and Baroque restoration, with its head attributed to Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Beyond inspiring awe at the beauty and craftsmanship of the ancient works, the exhibition conveys "the lifespan of the sculptures, from the 1st century AD to 2025, because these sculptures have lived many lives," Casler Price says. "They had the life they lived when they were created. They had another life when they were passed down or excavated. Then there is the life they lived in the Renaissance and the life they are living now with this exhibit."
