In an upstairs lounge, the palette deepens with a mood that riffs on early-2000s Tom Ford-era Gucci: low light, with walls and ceiling drenched in Sherwin-Williams Status Bronze. 54 lacquered Chinese cabinet with brass medallions, gifted by his mother, was purchased in San Francisco in the 1970s. In an upstairs lounge, the palette deepens with a mood that riffs on early-2000s Tom Ford- era Gucci: low light, with walls and ceiling drenched in Sherwin- Williams Status Bronze. Drapery in a similar bronze hue creates a monochromatic effect, and a generous sofa, upholstered in bronzy-brown fabric, was chosen for its ample size. It's piled with colorful pillows made from Josef Frank fabric and a botanical print from Copacabana Palace in Rio. "We spend most of our time up here, probably spent sleeping on the couch," Johnston laughs. Bronze walls and a vintage orange velvet loveseat in the couple's bedroom reinforce a sense of coziness — "almost like a hug," Loera says. It opens onto a light-filled artist's studio, where he's currently at work on commissions, including painting a large Noguchi-style paper lantern for a client. "It's nice — the commute isn't far," he jokes. "I've had workspaces in my house before, but never anything like this, so I get a lot more work done." The bedroom looks into Loera's studio, with custom projects in progress. Loera painted a wall mural, paper lantern, and tablecloth with flowers and birds inspired by one in Rosetta, a favorite Mexico City restaurant.
