Texas Artists Today T exas Artists Today is named after curator Catherine D. Anspon's 2010 book of the same title, a survey of 62 leading talents culled from around the state. This fall, painter Angela Fabbri and sculptor Julia McLaurin return to the gallery, joined by newcomer crochet maven Elaine Bradford. Texas Artists Today is directed by Burning Man veteran John Walker. California-born, Mississippi-raised, and Houston- based painter Angela Fabbri is known for creating eye-catching, boldly colorful acrylic canvases bearing cheeky subjects. Her oeuvre includes showing in the 2019 Florence Biennale and three exhibitions at Spectrum fair during Art Basel Miami Beach, as well as exhibitions in New York and Houston, including a pop-up gallery in River Oaks District. Her calling card is the backwards block-letter text found in the background of her works. This motif, which spells out the subject of the painting or a poignant message, is meant to encourage audiences to slow down and be present. At Halles Art Barn, Fabbri showcases new Pop paintings, including a new Round Top series, and merch in her signature style. A ceramicist, sculptor, and self-proclaimed "Lisa Frank fanatic," Julia McLaurin creates playful, whimsical, iconographic sculptures that celebrate the beauty of the ordinary. Giant clay emojis, frosted donuts, Whataburger hamburgers, Squishmallows, and even bottles of ranch dressing are just some of the objects for which she's known. Through Pop art, McLaurin invites viewers to experience whimsy and playfulness. At Halles Art Barn, McLaurin showcases photographic collages, ceramic food art, and a few new surprises. Crochet artist Elaine Bradford, who weaves nostalgia and personal history into her work, is a collector of antiques and secondhand items culled from thrift stores, which she transforms with crochet and embroidery to tell a new story. Though these yarn crafts are often thought of as "women's work," the Houston-based artist uses them in a nontraditional way, celebrating the often-unseen hours of labor as well as the connotations of comfort and home. At Halles Art Barn, Bradford showcases charming crochet works married with found objects that wink at the Texas West. An Artist Duo H alles Art Barn is also home to the artist collective of Jordan Geibel and BK Holsomback, two Round Top veterans who traverse the media of photography and collage. Photographer Jordan Geibel is on a quest to find the beauty in "literally everything," as she describes it. A Houston native and Brenham local, her creative expertise also encompasses website design, photo styling, branding, and art direction. Geibel's Lady with a Drink series has been exhibited at Houston Center for Photography, and Lady with the City Boots IV is pictured on the cover of this show guide. At Halles Art Barn, Geibel showcases "Ornamental Irony: A Cheeky Chinoiserie Series," created in collaboration with stylist Whitney Would. Dallas-based artist BK Holsomback works with collage, painting, and found materials. Her pieces evoke feelings of nostalgia, calling upon images and narratives of the past. At Halles Art Barn, Kaufman showcases a series of Western- inspired works that incorporate vintage stamps and postcards, as well as paint and collage. Her print Angels of the Guadalupe, which was created to honor victims of the Texas Hill Country and Camp Mystic floods and raise funds for Texas Flood Relief, will be available in open editions.
