R ococo, Peter Marino's new capsule collection for Rubelli, draws from the 18th-century Venetian master Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, who was celebrated for his luminous frescoes and watercolor studies filled with movement and drama. Marino isolated fragments from two of Tiepolo's watercolors — a cherub's arm, Psyche's ascent, the sweeping lines of a centaur — and handed them to Rubelli's style office for reinterpretation. Known for his cinematic photography and interiors sensibility, Friedman's new collaboration with paint company Color Atelier reflects the region's desert light, rugged terrain, and romantic mythology with hues dubbed Rabbit's Tongue, Old Saddle, and Big Texas Sky. "The Marfa palette has lived in my head for over a decade. Marino — the visionary New York architect and designer behind flagship interiors for Tiffany & Co., Chanel, Dior, and Louis Vuitton — has designed two previous art-influenced collections for Rubelli, which was founded in 1889. The Rococo collection is woven at the company's Como mill in double-sided silk, with distinct fronts and backs, resulting in nine designs that yield 18 variations.
