This season, the Nasher Sculpture Center mounts "Bruce Nauman: Identical," focusing on a recent series fresh from the artist's studio that is alternately disturbing, playful, and surreal. Hint: Taxidermy forms are involved, as coyotes and foxes common to Nauman's New Mexico home are rendered in polyurethane, silicone rubber, and cast plaster to visceral effect (September 19, 2026 – March 21, 2027). Meadows Doubleheader: At SMU's Meadows Museum, fall's doubleheader begins with Picasso's mastery with clay, explored in "Picasso Beyond the Canvas." The exhibition was sparked by gifts to the Meadows, most notably from the family of Robert and Tina Tonti, whose recent bequest includes a trove of Picasso ceramics spanning the classic years of his clay creativity, 1953 to 1963. Bookended with the Picasso show is a loan exhibit culled from Dallas-based Artnews Top 200 Collectors Carl and Marilynn Thoma's remarkable holdings of Art of the Spanish Americas, one of the four collecting fields for which their Thoma Foundation is known. Visitors will time-travel to 1600 through 1850 and discover the rich painting traditions from present-day Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador — shaped by, as the exhibition is titled, "Spectacles of Power and Faith." Many works, including recent acquisitions, have never been seen by the public. A highlight will be the recreation of a chapel, down to music and scent, to channel the time and place of many of the paintings' original sacred home (both exhibits through January 24, 2027).
