SIMON GENTRY FULTON DAVENPORT I t's a busy month as we wind up the large spring issues. I'm off to New York this week with two associates to tie up fall advertising with the national fashion houses. Then it's Dallas Art Fair opening night Thursday, April 12 — a glorious night for art lovers. On the same night, I'll be recording the first segment (there are four) of the BBC's Titanic series, written by Julian Fellowes, who wrote the hedonistic costume-drama Downton Abbey, with which we are all obsessed. Laurann Claridge and I will be moderating Decorative Center Houston Spring Market keynote Wednesday, April 18. Elena Davis' first luncheon for her I Am Waters Foundation brings in supermodels from the '80s Wednesday, April 25. And finally, Lawndale Design Fair, which PaperCity is always involved in, opens Friday, April 27. Sooo … to recharge and find solitude in which to write, I'm on the hunt for the bucolic life — a small, precious farm for my family's summer HQ. I need to procure it early enough in the season to plant a vegetable garden. I began perusing har.com for farm leases months ago. Nothing. As I've learned, it's all word of mouth. My first thought was that I wanted an honest agrarian utopia with a few acres, shade trees, a pond. But the list of must-haves is growing. "It's awfully hot in the Hill Country in summer," said one farm owner in Brenham. "You'll need a pool." Both children want to take friends because … "What will we do there?" More bedrooms. "What about an ATV, mom?" More acres. "We have to fish! What will we eat, mom?" Good point. Make that a bass-stocked pond. Might as well have a sprinkler system for watering the vegetable garden, and someone to clean the pool. Might as well stay home. Holly Moore, editor in chief holly@papercitymag.com APRIL 2012 | STYLE | FASHION | SOCIAL W ho is John Galt? Anyone who has read Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged knows the answer. I've been searching for more than 20 years but never made the time to sit down and read the magnum opus until this recent spring break — and I knocked it out in less than a week! You can't help but be shuddered by the stark differences in the socialist group and the profit-loving protagonists. Oddly, I found myself being motivated by both sides to come back from the break and work hard at the magazine — ultimately siding with the protagonists, of course! Post-spring break also means it's time for the Dallas Art Fair, now in its fourth year. After thoughtful sharpening, fine-tuning and curating its content and programming by Chris Byrne with the support of his partner, John Sughrue, this year's Fair is set to eclipse all prior fairs. The Fair is April 13 through 15, with opening events the night April 11 and 12. See our special insert for more details and schedules, or visit dallasartfair.com. I know John Galt … do you? Kate Allen Stukenberg Meet You at the DALLAS ART FAIR One of our most intriguing rites of spring in the Texas cultural firmament is Dallas Art Fair 2012 — and it's happening this month, unveiling April 13 through 15 at Fashion Industry Gallery, in the Dallas Arts District. Are we going? You can count on it. (Follow our daily blog from the Fair at papercitymag.com/Arts.) Meanwhile, as media sponsor, we've once again compiled an advance preview of all the Fair action — the international, national and Texas power players; the most scintillating artists; the lively programming; and all the openings. Peruse our guide in advance of your Fair days for info about securing limited-edition Premiere Patron Passes and Patron Passes, as well as Preview Gala and ticketing details. This year, we'd say the theme is "iconoclasts," from the Fair co-founders Chris Byrne and John Sughrue to Karen Carson's Insatiable Desire, 2011, at Rosamund Felsen Gallery the exhibitors, who range from a performing artist transformed into Lower East Side gallerist (Hudson of Feature Inc.) to 20-something dealer Vladimir Restoin Roitfeld, whose sensibility is filtered through a Euro, film and fashion lens.
