Catherine D. Anspon FACTOR t's an explosive spring in the Texas art world, so follow these pages closely in the coming months for our insider preview of the Dallas Art Fair and FotoFest. Meanwhile, our top touts for February are Laura Lark's incredible ink portraits on Tyvek at Devin Borden Gallery (February 11 – April 17) and Gallery Sonja Roesch's exhibition celebrating 21 years in the biz. Best bets at her temple of minimalism? Texans Hills Snyder, Myke Venable Laura Lark's Janice R, 2011 at Devin Borden Gallery and Jonathan Leach, rubbing Gunmetal glam: The It Kit by vbeauté Anyone who knows what it feels like to keep a spare LBD and a pair of Louboutins at the office or how dizzying it is to jet from a high-powered meeting to a black-tie gala — all in a day's work — must make room in her handbag for this beauty find. The It Kit by vbeauté is an eggshaped, gunmetal-gray clutch that brings to mind a mini version of the famous pod that incubated a certain megastar at the 2011 Grammys. But instead of opening the sleek container to find a pint-sized Gaga, The It Kit hatches five vbeauté products, from the foamy Evidence Eraser cleanser to the Undercover Agent anti-wrinkle serum — all in regal, plum-colored tubes and travel-friendly sizes. Vbeauté's founder, New York–based Julie Macklowe, found inspiration for the line in her own jet-setting lifestyle: managing multi-million-dollar hedge funds, being a mother and sitting on committees for the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Fashion Week at Lincoln Center. So, when she set out to produce her first line of beauty products, she sought only the best visage-care recipes. The result? The It Kit, plus a whole range of luxurious elixirs, including an exfoliant, eye and face crèmes and a skin-brightening agent all made from a botanical stem-cell base from the Alpine Rose plant found in Switzerland. They're just the things to bring with you on your own winter jet jaunt, whether you're taking the G650 to Aspen or the Alps. Meet Ms. Macklowe at Tootsies Friday, February 3, 4 to 7 pm. The It Kit $165, at Tootsies. SEAN HORTON, FOUNDER/OWNER/DIRECTOR OF HORTON GALLERY, TAKES QUESTIONS FROM BILL ARNING, DIRECTOR OF THE CONTEMPORARY ARTS MUSEUM HOUSTON. COURTESY HORTON GALLERY C. Sean Horton DALLAS ART FAIR: APRIL 13 – 15, 201 PREVIEW GALA APRIL 12 2; WWW.DALLASARTFAIR.COM Once my child passed sixth grade, I am loath to admit, I really couldn't help him with homework. Who has ever heard of Chicago Math. And Algebra II? Forget it. I am now addicted to the recently opened Study Lounge in West University Village. President Shelby Joe, who began General Academic in 2003, and VP Stephen Hayes, both Rice School grads, have created a teen-approved, coffee-shop-like space with study areas, kitchen and private conference rooms. Most of the 40-plus tutors who man the Lounge are Rice undergrads and grads. Simply walk in, and your child will be checked in, and tutors make sure he or she works through an agenda. Mom pays by the day or month or opts for an unlimited subscription. General Academic has been a go-to for in-home tutoring for eight years, and the Lounge offers day-to-day tutoring, as well as intensive skills assessment and ISEE, SAT and ACT prep classes limited to eight students (which my son just completed), as well as foreign language and creative writing workshops. Finals will be here before you know it. Open Sunday through Thursday, 4 to 9 pm, and Saturday, noon to 5 pm. 2339 University Blvd. above Berripop, 713.893.8453; shelby.joe@generalacademic.com; generalacademic.com. Holly Moore SOCIALWHIRL It's all about the arts this month, and PaperCity is there, as media sponsor, for four big nights. We begin on Saturday, February 4, with destined-to-be-dazzling performances by Gloria Gaynor, The Pointer Sisters and Nile Rodgers, with vinyl spun by DJ Ultragrrl, at the Texas Children's Cancer Center's Evening with Disco Legends, where megaphilanthropists Lester and Sue Smith's The Smith Foundation generously matches every contribution, dollar for dollar (Jayne Dumolt, 832.824.6818) … Then the curtain rises upon Houston Ballet Ball: "Aubergine" on Wednesday, February 15, chaired by the inimitable John and Becca Cason Thrash and Greggory and Pat Burk, honoring social scribe Shelby Hodge, at the Wortham Theater Center (Suzie Cadey, scadey@houstonballet.org). What I'm most excited about? Our curated auction of Texas painters, photographers and sculptors, paired with top-tier internationals. Prepare to collect works by Joe Mancuso, Adela Andea, Paul Horn, Lucinda Cobley, Thedra Cullar-Ledford, Ibsen Espada, Molly Gochman, Joseph Cohen, Wayne Gilbert, Amita Bhatt, Julian Schnabel and more, as well as bid on an extraordinary culinary and film experience with Texas Artist of the Year/Rome Prize man Bert Long Jr. and Joan Batson. Besides this art loot — the first time in memory when our town's significant visual talents have come together to support the performing arts — there are other auction goodies, such as rings donated by Harry Winston, De Beers, Michael Tracey, Katy Briscoe, Katie Decker, Judith Ripka and Valobra. Wow! … The following week brings an important photographic collecting opportunity when the Houston Center for Photography Fine Print Auction unfurls at the Junior League of Houston Wednesday, February 22, chaired by astute collector Jereann Chaney (sandy@hcponline.org) … Break out your PJs for Hope Stone Dance's Breakfast for Dinner on Saturday, March 3 at the new Houston Ballet Center for Dance (Amy Pearl, amy@hopestoneinc.org) … And speaking of performances, the Junior League's Starry Night Charity Ball headlines a charming variety show featuring members and Joe Mancuso's Untitled pals on Thursday through Saturday, February 9 through 11 (Shannon (Big Pink FLower), 2009, at Wiesedeppe, 713.871.6612). See you on the town. Catherine D. Anspon Houston Ballet Ball Auction COURTESY BARBARA DAVIS GALLERY How will you be curating your booth at the Fair? Will we be seeing some of your star painters such as the always amazing Keltie Ferris? All of my artists are stars, Bill! I'll be debuting two new works by Texas-born, Bill Arning New York–based Daniel Rios Rodriguez. His work, which was recently featured in a solo show at White Columns [New York, New York], tends to begin as depictions of everyday, vernacular scenes from his and his family's life in a style that marries the mannerisms of Forrest Bess with the figurative lines of Picasso. A new carved wood bas-relief sculpture by Minnesota-based Aaron Spangler — who, as you know, was seen late last year at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston in the traveling exhibition "The Spectacular of Vernacular" — will be featured. Also on view will be Tisch Abelow's new paintings, which address some of the formal issues introduced by color theorists and early abstract artists such as Josef Albers and Hilma af Klint but with a solipsistic sort of humor. For the rest of the conversation, peruse papercitymag.com. Stephen Hayes and Shelby Joe JENNY ANTILL Why are you exhibiting at the Dallas Art Fair 2012? So that I have an excuse to eat at La Calle Doce in Oak Cliff, of course! I'm excited to introduce several new artists in Dallas. I hope to offer a sense of discovery for collectors and curators — the Texas art community has always been very supportive of my various endeavors, and I appreciate the opportunity to have a dialogue within the context of an intimate fair like the Dallas Art Fair. The group of galleries that has been assembled this year rivals the major fairs in other cities; it's impressive to see the Dallas art community foster this kind of highquality event.
