A lways operating way outside the box, the Dallas Contemporary set the tone for a stimulating season with a New Year opening celebration highlighting five exhibitions. French artist JR captivated enthusiasts with his participatory public art project, the "Inside Out" photobooth. JR was the 2011 recipient of the TED Prize, which helped him launch his international project: turning the world into one giant public canvas. Let's just say the Contemporary's fête provided the perfect palette to further his cause. While board presidents Muffin Lemak and Shelby Wagner entertained, guests queued up for cameos in the booth. Other thought-provoking exhibitions: "Les Misérables: Post-Conceptual Art"; "Paula Crown — Inside My Head: A Contemporary Self-Portrait"; Oak Cliff native Arthur Peña's "Slight Shift, Steady Hand"; and the "Lavish: Design in Dallas" exhibition, which included the perceptive piece by The Office of Angela Scott, Dangling by a Shoe String. Snap-happy: Paula Crown, Megan Adams Brooks, Marcia Millard, Cecilia Muris, Lynn Born, Andria Kushan, Kristie Ramirez, Bree Foster, Scott Newton, Michelle Moussa, and Nicole and Scott Horn. Instead, it's usually a splash of designer favorites that they grab from the closet between late- afternoon activities such as leaving the law firm or picking up the kids from football practice. So, when Kenny Goss and Joyce Goss held an intimate cocktail party to announce plans for Re:Define, I was pleasantly surprised with the ensembles in attendance. Rocking the current Seattle plaid-shirt trend was Brian Bolke, who paired it with brilliant black-and- white Viktor & Rolf penny loafers. Derek and Christen Wilson showed up with their oldest son, Truman, who generally looks better than I do. Of course, Christen looked as if she were dashing through the streets of Paris on her way to the next runway show. Re:Define — or, in this case, refined — is an art exhibition and auction of original works by some of the world's foremost artists. Over the past two years, the event has raised nearly $2 million in Dallas for the fight against HIV/AIDS. So ,what was this big announcement? The Goss- Michael Foundation and the Dallas Contemporary have merged Bespoke, the Contemporary's largest annual fund-raiser, with Re:Define to create the edgiest art gala on the social calendar. Re:Define will now benefit the MTV Staying Alive Foundation and Dallas Contemporary, with Kenny Goss and Joyce Goss as chairmen. Raising their bubbly to the news: Ariel Saldivar, Faisal Halum, Becky and Ken Bruder, Susan Posnick, Gonzalo Bueno, Anna-Sophia Van Zweden, Leisa Street, and Kim and Bryan Williams.
