Collectors from Edward Albee to Menil curator Toby Kamps own them. All along, Akin has also pursued photography, a media whose nuances he first explored as a student at the University of North Texas, where his professors included leading lensmen Nic Nicosia, the late Casey Williams and panoramic image-maker Skeet McAuley. Akin soon developed his signature style and subsequently was acquired for the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. He credits a pantheon of photographic greats as instrumental in honing his eye: "Overall, Eggleston is the biggest influence on my work. [Also] Friedlander, Winogrand, Evans, Frank, Cartier-Bresson …" Now we present images from Akin's latest, culled from a road trip to the vast American West undertaken last summer with mentor/fellow artist Mari Omori; in Akin's viewfinder are classic landscapes and celebrated artistic interventions into the terrain, aka earthworks. On the itinerary are definitive places from Arches National Park in Moab, Utah to Robert Smithson's Spiral Jetty (1970), the latter the subject of the series presented here for PaperCity readers, including sweeping multi-panel offerings that convey the light, space and grandeur of the late Smithson's ultimate masterpiece. Archival ink-jet prints, editions of 10, signed verso, from $800 per 20 x 30 inch panel to $4,000 for 30 x 100 inch multi-panel. PC Acquire Notes of lavender, amber, vanilla, Indian Jasmine, Manika Honey and hints of Peruvian Heliotrope scent the room with layers of fragrance. The source? Dallas-based Xela Aroma candles. After discovering reed diffusers in Europe years ago, attorney and entrepreneur Maryann Mihalopoulos introduced them to the U.S. market, envisioning her own collection of candles and scents of a higher quality, all made in the U.S. Using the finest essential oils and sourced eco-friendly glass and recycled paper packaging, Mihalopoulos now runs a 100 percent women- and minority- owned business with a percentage of each sale going toward a national or local charity. "When many other companies chose to subcontract overseas to save on cost, I made a conscious commitment to source and manufacture within the U.S." Mihalopoulos says. "All Xela Aroma products are hand-poured and individually assembled in Dallas." With 20 scents currently available in an array of collections — Classic, Love Connection, Inked, Spa and Natural Luxuries, to name a few — the candles can also be personalized with endless fragrance choices and packaging options for your next event. Eau de Cattle Baron's? From $28, at Neiman Marcus, Osgood O'Neil Salons, Salon 4411, xelaaroma.com. Lauren Scheinin Light Me Up Dallas' Russian revolution is far from over. Our own Muscovite, 21-year-old fashion sensation Kira Plastinina, has joined forces with designers and fellow Russkies Olga Prokopova and Lesia Paramonova (of Volha and LES, respectively) for a collection of jewelry and accessories stocked exclusively at Lublu in The Plaza at Preston Center. Endorsed by street-style vets Mira Duma and Lena Perminova, Volha's handcrafted jewelry is produced in Russia and made of freeform faceted semiprecious stones (think agate and crystals from Brazil and Madagascar). LES' handmade fulled-wool headpieces created for Lublu's campaign are inspired by the collection's floral prints. "I love collaborating with other designers, especially these two," Plastinina says. "Introducing them to the U.S. market has been fun, and each designer has gone to great lengths to incorporate design inspiration in a unique way." $400 to $800, at Lublu.
