I t was all in a night's work when intrepid colleague Seth Vaughan and I stepped out, pen and camera in hand. The mission: Visit four hot art stops, including a brush with fame with wry, conceptual lensman William Wegman of the legendary Weimaraner pics and poses. We began at Texas Gallery, where Wegman wowed with some strange and deadpan '70s-era pre- Fay drawings and photos. Proprietors Fredericka Hunter and Ian Glennie worked the crowd, including pundit Dave Hickey, in from Santa Fe and set to speak at a Glasstire lecture at Rice the next day. We rushed passed Hickey at the door, in a cluster of smokers focused on meeting the headliner. We were armed and dangerous, bearing August 2006 PaperCity issues with Wegman's uncanny woman with a dog head on the cover, intent on getting his autograph on copies. Monsieur Wegman laconically obliged. During the signing session, we chatted up Susie and Sanford Criner; admiring artists Jack Massing with wife Star, Laura Lark, Carl Palazzolo and Shane Tolbert; Rowena Young and Buddy Steves (contemplating an acquisition); Heidi Gerger; and Brian James. Next stop was 4411 Montrose, where Houston talent Troy Stanley raided the icebox, with an odd take on materials involving a paper shredder and macramé plant holders, at Barbara Davis Gallery. Fellow dealers Anya Tish and Zoya Tommy, at their eponymous galleries, were not to be outdone, mounting compelling group views. Flocking to 4411: featured abstract painter Marcelyn McNeil with collector Sandy Dow; Norman Ewart; architect Simona Furini and Tom Montelbano; Ceron, shopping for a canvas for his wedding registry; op artist Orna Feinstein; photog Marlene Picard, in from the West Coast, snapping away with husband Wayne; finance lady Laurie McRay; and French cultural attaché Sylvie Christophe.
