Megan Pruitt Winder MARCH | PAGE 8 | 2014 F or nearly 20 years, Chris Akin has manned the visitor's desk at The Menil Collection or patrolled its galleries — an understated, polite presence whose quiet drawings made while on guard duty have engendered exhibitions from NYC's The Drawing Center to Houston's Devin Borden Hiram Butler Gallery. Collectors from Edward Albee to Menil curator Toby Kamps own them. All along, Akin has also pursued photography, a media whose nuances he first explored as a student at the University of North Texas, where his professors included leading lensmen Nic Nicosia, the late Casey Williams and panoramic image-maker Skeet McAuley. Akin soon developed his signature style and subsequently was acquired for the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. He credits a pantheon of photographic greats as instrumental in honing his eye: "Overall, Eggleston is the biggest influence on my work. [Also] Friedlander, Winogrand, Evans, Frank, Cartier-Bresson …" Now we present images from Akin's latest, culled from a road trip to the vast American West undertaken last summer with mentor/fellow artist Mari Omori; in Akin's viewfinder are classic landscapes and celebrated artistic interventions into the terrain, aka earthworks. On the itinerary are definitive places from Arches National Park in Moab, Utah to Robert Smithson's Spiral Jetty (1970), the latter the subject of the series presented here for PaperCity readers, including sweeping multi-panel offerings that convey the light, space and grandeur of the late Smithson's ultimate masterpiece. Archival ink-jet prints, editions of 10, signed verso, from $800 per 20 x 30 inch panel to $4,000 for 30 x 100 inch multi-panel. That's the question University of Houston professors Aaron Parazette and Gael Stack posed when they instructed undergrad painting majors to visit both museum and food emporium to glean subjects and inspiration for a series of canvases that were first exhibited at Inman Gallery (in August 2013). Fiesta-connected art aficionado Joshua Silver discovered the clever UH student show at Inman, then invited the painters to come to the aisles of Fiesta Mart at 8130 Kirby to mount a supermarket exhibit (through March 23). The grocer's research and analytics man Barry Hart was instrumental in green-lighting this pop-up, which brings the white cube to the frozen food section and beyond, making for a cheeky little chapter in the annals of Pop art. Catherine D. Anspon O ne of the most exciting mergers and acquisitions in Texas real estate took place this spring when Sotheby's International Realty came to court one of the country's most prominent realtors: Martha Turner Properties, which was co-founded by its eponymous co-president in Houston in 1981 as Turner Owens Real Estate, segueing into its own firm, in 1986. In the ensuing three-plus decades, the carriage-class company has grown — and thrived — to achieve its current status of six offices, more than 220 agents and, above all, a beyond impressive sales record that in 2013 soared to $2 billion, to rank number eight in America. The new moniker for the realtor that represents such opulent properties as 88 Grand Regency Circle (a 30,000 square-foot, French Renaissance-style estate nestled on the Jack Nicklaus-designed Carlton Woods golf course in The Woodlands) is Martha Turner Sotheby's International Realty. Martha Turner and Tom Anderson continue on at the top as co-presidents. marthaturner.com. Catherine D.
