I n celebration of dual exhibition openings at the Dallas Contemporary — Julian Schnabel's An Artist Has A Past (Puffy Clouds and Strong Cocktails): 15 Paintings Over The Last Decade and Richard Phillips' Negation of the Universe — The Joule Hotel hosted a seated dinner for 100 VIP guests. The sublimely edgy crowd dined under the stars within the glass-roofed dining room on the fifth-floor terrace. Phillips, who sat with girlfriend Liza Thorn, Christen and Derek Wilson, and Lisa and John Runyon, toasted to sharing the exhibition with Schnabel. Actress Lara Flynn Boyle (remember Twin Peaks, the infamous pink ballerina dress worn at the 2003 Golden Globes or, more recently The Practice?) attended with husband Don Thomas; they were seated with Kenny Goss and Joyce Goss, while I dined with Shelby Wagner and Niven Morgan at this very special evening, which was also shared with board members Mark Giambrone, Tammy Cotton Hartnett, and guest artists Piotr Ulanski and Paula Crown. We collectively returned the next evening to the Dallas Contemporary, where amidst shock and awe, Julian Schnabel unveiled his first U.S. museum exhibition since the mid-'80s in conjunction with Phillips' first solo U.S. museum exhibition. The latter's impossible-to-miss Playboy Marfa installation on the cusp of Irving and North Riverfront Boulevard beckons visitors to the warehouse space cum museum; the evening commenced with the member's-only vernissage, followed by the public opening, which was attended by more than 1,200 guests. The artists' works of art, exhibited throughout the main galleries, include three- looped videos by Phillips titled First Point, 2012; Sasha Grey, 2011; and Lindsey Lohan, 2011; the 1972 Dodge Charger car installation Playboy Charger; and Phillips' iconic painting Mask (owned by the Runyons), which was the image chosen for the announcement for his debut show in New York in 1996. I visited Schnabel's exhibition last — a perfect anecdote to calm the senses from Phillips' wonderfully vivid pop cultural experience. The hugely proportioned oil-on-canvas and mixed-media paintings pack a powerful punch, leaving one with an immense sense of awe, such as Julian Schnabel's Untitled (Goya), 2007, oil on awning. Guests Heidi Klum, America's fave German (well, Dallas' second favorite after Dirk Nowitzki, of course) with boyfriend Vito Schnabel, Alden and Janelle Pinnell, Sheryl and Eric Maas, Jonathan Viner, Charlotte and Shy Anderson, and Matthew Simon gathered outside the museum for artful conversation, listened to the tunes of DJ Fifth Dimension and savored bites courtesy of Bowlounge and sips from Ben E. Keith and Pogo's Wines and Spirits. Both exhibitions continue at the Dallas Contemporary till August 10. BY MAX TROWBRIDGE.
