E xciting news for the Knox-Henderson area: Warby Parker Classroom has opened, with decor from the 1950s (vintage chalkboards, school supplies and globes) and the entire range of Warby Parker eyewear. We love the old-fashioned yellow school bus parked just outside, equipped with leather sofas, vintage reads and other interesting finds. But the takeaway here is that every pair of Warby Parker sunnies and reading glasses are $95 ($150 prescription), and for each pair sold, another pair goes to someone in need. It's affordable eyewear, chicly designed. As for the name: It's a bit from two monikers found in Jack Kerouac's personal journals: Zag Parker and Warby Pepper. 2008 N. Henderson Ave., 972.426.7272, warbyparker.com. Henderson Avenue, 469.334.0661, bonobos.com. Haley Schultheis WELL APPOINTED Knife, 5300 E. Mockingbird Lane, 214.443.9339, hotelpalomar-dallas.com Chef John Tesar has carved a slice out of the Dallas steakhouse scene with his new restaurant, Knife, inside The Hotel Palomar. The renovated space, like the menu, is a throwback to the '70s steakhouse with an updated Tesar touch. Past the four-foot steel knife, the entrance glows from the brightly lit custom-built meat-aging room. Inside is the star attraction: a 240-day aged Niman Ranch rib eye (available in September). Texas beef prevails throughout the menu, and classic cuts include sirloin, filet and ground, along with new-school cuts like chuck flap, culotte and tri tip. Spicy blood sausage, Akaushi rib eye, sous vide beef cheeks and slow-braised pork jowl are for the more adventurous. Many portions are Texas-sized and meant for sharing, such as the whole roasted chicken with panzenella or 18-hour braised crispy pork belly. Breckenridge Taylor Design helped create the wood-paneled space with its green-tiled open kitchen lined with bar stools that encourage conversation between chef and diners. A menu like this could be intimidating for steak-house novices, but at Knife, the waitstaff and sommelier are comfortably nearby to field queries. Non-meat eaters will find locally grown vegetables, sustainable fish and house-made pastas. Not to be missed is the yellowtail appetizer with Texas ruby grapefruit and avocado. And while it's in season, try Kent's heirloom tomato, pressed watermelon and herb salad Tower-stacked tempura onion rings are crunchy and crisp, but the decadent avocado fries are sinful. A sweet way to end the Knife experience: David Collier's liquid caramel cake with pretzel ice cream.
