HOUGHTON HALL "A ROUNDED VIEW OF WHAT IS BEAUTIFUL AND CORRECT … A HOUSE HAS MANY DIFFERENT LAYERS AND GENERATIONS, ONE ON TOP OF ANOTHER." — LORD DAVID CHOLMONDELEY, 7TH MARQUESS OF CHOLMONDELEY, ON WHAT HE HOPES MUSEUM-GOERS TAKE AWAY FROM THE MFAH EXHIBITION O riginally commissioned in the early 18th century by England's first prime minister, Sir Robert Walpole, this 106-room Palladian pile in England's Norfolk County is the home of the current Marquess of Cholmondeley, his wife and two children. We're fawning over the William Kent furniture, Sèvres porcelains, Sargent family portraits and Marchioness Sybil's 15-piece Garrard dressing table set from 1913, as well as personal correspondence between the marchioness and Charlie Chaplin. Bringing together some 100 of the these objects, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston's "Houghton Hall: Portrait of an English Country House" exhibition (through September 21) explores one of the world's most remarkable estates, its inhabitants and the objects they've lived among for nearly 300 years.
