T his month, Taylor & Taylor Designs unveils the Calvin Klein Curator Collection in its Memorial- Spring Branch design shop. The 7,500-square-foot aerie, founded and owned by Gail Taylor, is the exclusive statewide purveyor of this handsome collection designed by Calvin Klein Home creative director Amy Mellen. Chaise longues, cocktail tables, sofas, beds, dining tables and chairs, bookcases, and mirrors — in blackened steel, smoked glass, stained oak, beech and walnut — whisper of important design movements and moments throughout history, reminding us of Biedermeier, Empire and Art Deco. The Tuxedo sofa, Waterfall side table and Klini chaise even recall an Agnes Martin canvas in their nuanced simplicity. Prepare for the sultry months by taking a visual plunge into Anya Tish Gallery's "Pool Party," which presents eight Texas, national and international talents in a smartly curated group show. The roundup spans diverse media, too — painting, photography, sculpture and drawing — by Kristen Martincic, Celan Bouillet, Lana Waldrep- Appl, James Zamora, Daniela Edburg, William Cannings, Katja Loher and Houston's Neva Mikulicz, whose droll drawing of a Whataburger cup features a sound component. Pay special attention to New American Paintings-anointed Zamora of Fort Worth, whose fluid passages of abstracted realism conjure everything from a crumpled can of Budweiser beer to a grocery aisle stocking foam picnic plates, as well as the hyper-real staged photographs of Mexico-based Edburg (a recent artist in resident at Montrose salon space Cherryhurst House). Also notable are internationally exhibited mistress of choreographed video environments Loher and Texas Tech professor Cannings, whose inflated metal sculpture replicates common objects, especially poolside swimming tubes. May 1 – 23, opening night Friday, May 1, 6 to 8:30 pm at Anya Tish Gallery, anyatishgallery.com. Catherine D. Anspon SPLASH D esigners Brendan Young and Vanessa Battaglia are known for their clever and surrealist wallpapers for UK-based Mineheart, such as white books on white shelving and stone Renaissance angels that appear to be carved onto a palazzo wall. Now they've beguiled us again — this time with furniture. Their lacquer tall cabinet and side table are cheeky interpretations of famous English royals; picture Leonardo da Vinci's 15th- century portrait of duchess Beatrice d'Este and a portrait of Henry VIII's last wife, Catherine Parr. The collection also includes Long Stretch, a rubber rug designed to look like cowhide. $1,500 to $5,400, at nestdallas.com.
