PHOTOGRAPHY PRISCILLA DICKSON, WILSON PARISH, JACOB POWER. HEART OF ROCK AND ROLL The lights dimmed, and as if this were a concert in the '80s (minus the flickering lighters), hundreds of posh Houstonians in black tie rushed the stage. The dance floor was packed as Huey Lewis & the News played hit after hit, as if it were 1988. Completing the musical trifecta at the after-party, was BPM by Bobby Yang, a classically trained violinist heavily influenced by Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. The unforgettable night raised more than $1.57 million for the Symphony's education and community programming, and the soundtrack will be playing in our heads for years to come. Front row: Chairs Lisa and Jerry Simon and Sherry and Jim Smith; honorees Betty and Jesse Tutor, Cora Sue and Harry Mach, Nancy and Robert Peiser, and Julia and Andrés Orozco-Estrada; auction chairs Ileana and Michael Treviño; after-party chairs Jennifer and Steve Dolman; and Symphony CEO/director Mark Hanson and wife Christina; Joella and Steven Mach, Margaret Williams, Diane Lokey Farb, Becca Cason Thrash, Jana and Scotty Arnoldy, Allie and Jay Fields, Valerie and Tracy Dieterich, Ting and John Bresnahan, Randy Powers, Bill Caudell, Greg Fourticq Jr., Colin Moussa, Matthew Grieves, Jeffrey Yates, Chris Goins, and Christina Stith. Chairs Lisa and Jerry Simon and Sherry and Jim Smith turned the distinguished gala of the 101-year- old institution on its head with a heavy injection of rock 'n' roll and headliner Huey Lewis & the News. POWER OF LOVE The hotly anticipated evening began on a high note, as Billy Joel protégé and Grammy and Tony Award nominee Michael Cavanaugh performed '70s and '80s hits on the piano, lending a jubilant supper-club vibe to the seated dinner, which was accompanied by wine pairings from Spec's. Richard Flowers of The Events Company transformed the ballroom of the Hilton Americas-Houston into a Dorsia-inspired lounge with edgy neon centerpieces, LED lounge furniture and a gleaming white dance floor. Guests excitedly filled out request cards for Cavanaugh to play their song … you know you had one.
